Three seats on the Lee County Schools school board were up for primary election on May 6, 2014 and were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbent Mark Akinosho, Ophelia Livingston and Shawn E. Williams advanced in the Democratic primary over Richard Hayes. Sandra Bowen, Phillip Helms and David L. Schau represented the Republican Party in November.

Bowen, Akinosho and Livingston won election to the three at-large seats over Helms, Schau and Williams.

Lee County Schools is located in Lee County, North Carolina. Lee County had a population of 59,715 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Lee County Schools was the 37th-largest school district in North Carolina, serving 9,834 students during the 2010-2011 school year.[2]

Demographics

Lee County underperformed in comparison to the rest of North Carolina in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 20.0% of Lee County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.8% for North Carolina as a whole. The median household income in Lee County was $45,284 compared to $46,450 for the state of North Carolina. The poverty rate in Lee County was 17.4% compared to 16.8% for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Lee County school board consisted of seven members elected to four-year terms at-large. The Democratic primary election was held on May 6, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014.Three seats were on the ballot in 2014 and four seats are on the ballot in 2016.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on February 10, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was February 28, 2014.[5]
