Two of the seven seats on the Lee County Schools school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Place 2 incumbent Larry Boswell (R) and Place 3 incumbent George Spence (R) won re-election without opposition.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Lee County Board of Education consists of seven members elected by district to six-year terms. The district's policy manual notes that board members must not be employed by the district during their service and hold high school degrees. Board members must also reside within their electoral districts for at least one year prior to the candidate filing deadline for the election in question. Additional qualifications include a provision for "good moral character" and qualities including "honesty, business ability, public spirit, and interest in the good of public education."[2]

Prospective board candidates were required to file with county party officials by November 6, 2015. Candidates must be 18 years old and reside in their counties for at least one year prior to the election.[3]

Lee County Schools is located in Lee County, Alabama. The county seat of Lee County is Opelika. Lee County was home to 154,255 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 13th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,847 students.[7]

Lee County outperformed the state of Alabama in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 32.5 percent of Lee County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 22.6 percent for Alabama as a whole.
