Lamar County School District is a school district in Mississippi. It was the seventh-largest school district in Mississippi, serving 9,404 students in the 2012-2013 school year.[1]

Lamar County School District is located in southern Mississippi in Lamar County. The county seat is Purvis. Lamar County was home to 60,618 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2]

Demographics

Lamar County outperformed compared to Mississippi as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 34.1 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 20.4 percent of state residents. The median household income for the county was $51,724, compared to $39,464 for the state. The percentage of people below poverty level for the county was 14.2 percent, compared to 22.0 percent for the state.[2]

The superintendent of Lamar County School District is Tess Smith. She was first elected to the position in 2014. Smith previously worked as a high school principal. She earned her B.S. in education and master's degree in counseling from the University of Southern Mississippi.[4][5]

Members of the Lamar County School District Board of Education are elected to six-year terms. One seat was up for election in 2014 and two seats were up for election in 2016.

Public participation in board meetings

The Lamar County School District Board of Education maintains the following policy on public testimony during board meetings:

The Board of Education of Lamar County School District wishes to provide an avenue for all citizens to express their interest and concerns for the school district. Accordingly, the public is invited to attend board meetings.

All meetings of this School Board are declared to be public meetings and shall be open to the public at all times unless declared an executive session as provided in sections 25-41-7 and 25-41-5.

This School Board shall make and enforce reasonable rules and regulations for the conduct of persons attending its meetings. (' 25-41-9)[7] [8]

Budget

From 1994 to 2013, the Lamar County School District had an average of $49,130,150 in revenue and $50,975,800 in expenditures, according to the United States Census Bureau's survey of school system finances. The district had a yearly average of $29,524,100 in outstanding debt. The district retired $1,278,100 of its debt and issued $3,884,450 in new debt each year on average.[9]
