Clarke County outperformed the state of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement and underperformed in terms of median household income in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 40.8 percent of Clarke County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Clarke County was $33,846, compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The superintendent of Clarke County School District was Philip D. Lanoue, who held the position from July 2009 until July 2017. He previously served as a principal for 18 years in [[Massachusetts]] and [[Vermont]] and was also the area assistant superintendent for [[Cobb County School District, Georgia|Cobb County School District]]. He has his bachelor's degree in secondary education from the University of Vermont, his master's in administration and planning from the University of Vermont and his doctorate in educational leadership from Mercer University. Members of the board are elected to four-year terms on a staggered basis. Five seats were up for election on May 20, 2014. Four seats  {{Greener|start=5/24/2016 9:00pm CDT|before=are|after=were}} on the ballot in May 2016.

The board maintains the following policy regarding public participation in board meetings last revised in 2010:

It is the belief of the School Board that members of the public should have an opportunity to speak at regular board meetings. Therefore, the agenda for every regularly scheduled board meeting will provide an opportunity for any member of the public to speak, however, the Board President will determine the parameters for public comment.
 
Members of the public who wish to speak at a regular board meeting must contact the superintendent’s office no later than 4:00PM the day of the regular meeting to be placed on the visitor’s list. ==Academic performance==
The [[Georgia Department of Education]] administers annual tests to students in grades three through eight called the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). These tests assess the proficiency of district students in five academic subjects including reading, English language arts (ELA), math, science and social studies. The CRCTs are designed to measure progress by students in topics covered by the [[Common Core|Common Core State Standards]]. A student meets state proficiency goals with a score of 800 and exceeds state proficiency goals with a score of 850 or higher.
