Marvin Pope (Democratic Party) was a judge for Judicial District 28 of the North Carolina 5th Superior Court Division. He assumed office on January 1, 2019. He left office on February 1, 2021.
Pope (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for the Judicial District 28 judge of the North Carolina 5th Superior Court Division. He won in the general election on November 6, 2018.
Pope was initially a superior court judge for the 28th Judicial District of the Eighth Division of the Superior Court. He was first elected in 2010.
In 2018, the North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 717, revising the state superior court, district court, and prosecutorial districts. Pope's seat on the Eighth Division was absorbed into the Fifth Division.
The North Carolina Superior Courts are split into five divisions and 48 districts. Superior court judges rotate among the districts within their division every six months.[1] However, superior court judges are elected by voters in their district and must reside in the district in which they are elected.[2]
Education
Pope graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1970 and the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1973.[3]
Career
Pope's early law career was spent in private practice, from 1973-2001. In 2001, he was appointed to the 28th Judicial District where he served as a district court judge until his election to the superior court in 2010.[3]

Pope ran for judge on the Superior Court in the 28th Judicial District. He defeated Heather Whitaker Goldstein and Diane K. McDonald in the general election.[4]
