Kansas Legislative session nearing end

TOPEKA, Kansas: Legislative session in the state is nearing its end, with the conclusion happening in late May. As for ballot measures in the state, none have been certified for the 2012 ballot, however, this session will not be the only opportunity for the lawmaking body to do so.

Section 8 of Article 2 states that the Legislature is to convene on the second Monday of January of each year. Section 8 also limits the length of regular sessions in even-numbered years to ninety calendar days, but it allows these sessions to be extended by a two-thirds affirmative vote of both houses. This means that legislature can still refer proposed ballot measures to the ballot next session.

Bills may be pre-filed between sessions in odd years and sessions in even years for consideration during the following sessions. To view a list of ballot measures in the state of Kansas, click here.
