The general election in Lake County featured three seats up for election on August 26, 2014. Incumbent William John Mathias faced a challenge from John J. Ardizone for the District 1 seat. The District 3 race included incumbent Tod Andre Howard and challengers Jamie Maret Hanja and Marc Anthony Dodd. Newcomers Nancy L. Muenzmay, Peter E. Tarby and Stephanie Ann Luke were running to replace Kyleen Fischer, who did not file for re-election in District 5.
The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. If no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in a particular district, the top two vote recipients advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.

Lake County Schools is based in Tavares, the county seat of Lake County, Florida. Lake County is home to 308,034 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] Lake County Schools was the 18th-largest school district in Florida, serving 41,319 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[3]

Lake County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Florida in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 20.2 percent of Lake County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.2 percent for Florida as a whole.
