Campaign themes
2014
Castañeda explained her themes for the 2014 campaign in an interview with the Rowlett Lakeshore Times:
“ |
The Garland ISD is now at a very critical time in which we must step up academic performance, invest in teacher development and upkeep our facilities -- or risk getting left behind by other districts in the Metroplex and the state. As a board, we have undertaken a massive effort to inspect each and every school and facility to assess its current condition with a particular view toward safety, accessibility, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, as well as to technology. We have communicated this information to the public via our website and at community forums, and we are considering a bond election that could be held in November. We have also undertaken a strategic plan with broad representation from our three constituent cities of Garland, Rowlett and Sachse with input from our taxpayers, including community leaders, business people, faith leaders, parents, teachers, administrators and students. I am a person who likes to finish what I start, and I have a strong work ethic. I would like to continue my work on the board to see these initiatives through. |

Worker visa program
She also responded to the district's worker visa issue that was under investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security:
“ |
The Garland ISD Board and Superintendent are working together to discuss, explore and attempt every legal option that is available to us to help the teachers that are affected. However, immigration law is complex and nothing is either certain or guaranteed to those who apply for permanent residency or citizenship. Having exhausted our legal options, we have conducted outreach to our elected officials at the state and national level to ask for their assistance and intervention on behalf of the teachers. |
