Smith received his J.D. from Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law.[2]

Smith has served as a Judge Advocate of the U.S. Army/Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He served in Iraq with the 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He has 19 years of military experience.[3]
