Expand all | Collapse all

Wanda Hunter is a district C native, homeowner, parent, and community advocate with a vision of justice for our city across four pillars which are housing, community engagement, the economy, and transit. Wanda is the mother of three phenomenal future leaders; Passion, Shekhinah, and Courtland. She has served her community in several capacities without title recognition. Wanda is a notable community servant, serving the least. She is inspired by her life experiences that have showed her that even at your lowest position in life you can still give back. Wanda's inspiration and experiences keep her humble.
  • Housing justice is a term that enforces equitable housing policies. Housing is a human right. Ignoring the people that are most impacted by being unhoused only exacerbates the issue. We need to preserve and build housing people can afford at every income level. Housing is a foundational issue that intersects with many other issues. On council, there can be many policies created that can be used as tools to address the housing crisis.
  • Community engagement justice seeks to uphold the integrity of relationships and trust between government organizations and communities. Community engagement is utilized to develop and achieve sustainable outcomes, and equitable decision-making processes. Community engagement is based on the democratic idea that everyone should have a say in the decision making around issues that impact their community. This requires intentional interactions between communities and public decision makers. Community engagement provides participants with information they need to engage in a meaningful way with policy issues and communicates, via feedback, how their input affects public decisions. It is built upon participation that fosters collaboration.
  • Economic justice is based on supply and demand, and its equitable allocation. For far too long, we have operated from a scarcity mindset. We have to shift our thinking towards abundance, knowing we have more than enough for everybody. Economic justice includes fiscal responsibility of leadership, and paying our workers a thriving just wage that values their worth. Fiscal responsibility of leadership means being better stewards of citizens' money and how it is spent.
Shirley Chisholm, was a true representative of her people.

Campaign website

Hunter's campaign website stated the following:

  • Intergenerational Leadership

Intergenerational Leadership is the collaboration between generations in an effort to lead together. This is accomplished by the elders teaching the importance of the historical context of how this city was governed during their era; generation Xers responsibilties are to bridge the gap between the elders and millenials by learning from the elders, holding current leadership, and teaching the millenials; millenials are responsible for learning the historical context, while extracting the valued lessons to develop a more effective innovative strategy for leadership of the future. It is critical that intergenerational leadership is implemented in the City of Raleigh at this time in this space.

  • Housing Justice

Housing Justice is a term that addresses all housing issues collectively. Housing justice addresses the lack of affordable housing, elderly housing issues, and unfair housing practices. District C is suffering in several areas of housing and it is time these areas be addressed.

  • Police Accountability

Implementing a citizen review board with investigatory, subpoena, and disciplinary powers. Raleigh Police Department's officers are sworn to protect and serve, having a citizen's review board implemented will be a tool to hold officers accountable. Implementing this board will not only say but display transparency.

  • Transit

Effectively addressing our transit needs via the Bus Rapid Transit System, along with the needs of our transit workers. Also looking at additional bicycle routes, multi use paths, wide shoulders, and buffered bicycle lanes.

  • Racial Equity and Inclusion

Developing a full department that addresses these issues throughout all of the City of Raleigh's departments. Requiring every employee to attend a dismantling racism training to get a foundational understanding of racism, its biases, and how it appears in everyday interactions. This department would also evaluate gender equity, and potentially the racial wealth and health disparities gap.

  • Infrastructure and the environment

Evaluating what out infrastructure can sustain throughout our development peak and how will that effect our environment. What is the water quality looking like?, How will it effect our electrical grids?[2]
