Sylvia Mendez's legacy as an advocate for educational equity profoundly influences my journey as a Latina candidate for PUD Commissioner in Snohomish County. In the 1940s, her family's courageous challenge against school segregation in California led to a landmark legal victory for desegregation statewide. Sylvia's perseverance and commitment to justice inspire my advocacy for equitable access to energy resources. Her dedication to equal rights guides my mission to promote fairness in energy access, echoing her belief that all children deserve quality education regardless of background. Like Sylvia, I passionately advocate for underrepresented communities, striving for inclusive and fair energy policies.

Sylvia Mendez's example demonstrates that meaningful change requires challenging norms and standing up for what's right, even in adversity. Her courage in pursuing justice serves as a model for equity in energy policy. In my campaign for PUD Commissioner, I aim to emulate Sylvia's dedication by championing policies that enhance energy efficiency and infrastructure, prioritizing marginalized groups. This includes addressing disparities in affordable, sustainable energy solutions, especially for non-English speakers and low-income families in Snohomish County. Sylvia's advocacy emphasizes collaboration and community engagement, values I share in shaping energy policies that benefit everyone through dialogue and cooperation.

Education and awareness, pivotal for lasting change, are underscored by Sylvia Mendez's legacy. As a candidate, I commit to educating the community on sustainable energy benefits and equitable access, empowering residents to shape our energy future inclusively.
Understanding "Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza" by Gloria Anzaldúa deeply shapes my political philosophy as a Latina candidate for PUD Commissioner in Snohomish County. Anzaldúa's exploration of culture, identity, and feminism from a Chicana perspective resonates profoundly with my own journey and goals. She challenges the notion of fixed identities, highlighting instead the fluidity of cultural identities, particularly in border regions. Similarly, my campaign emphasizes inclusivity and celebrates the rich diversity within Snohomish County. I advocate for policies that honor and serve our diverse communities, ensuring equitable access to vital resources such as clean energy.

Anzaldúa's concept of "mestizaje," which embraces the blending of cultures and identities, is central to my governance approach. I aim to foster unity while valuing the unique contributions of each community. This echoes Anzaldúa's call to amplify the voices of those often marginalized in decision-making processes.

Moreover, Anzaldúa's critique of oppression resonates with my platform advocating for fair utility pricing and robust environmental protection measures. I am committed to addressing systemic injustices that disproportionately impact marginalized communities. Integrity and transparency, core values in Anzaldúa's work, shape my commitment to inclusive decision-making and community engagement throughout my campaign."Borderlands/La Frontera" informs my political vision by emphasizing cultural hybridity, inclusivity, resistance against oppression, and personal integrity. These principles guide the policies I propose, which are aimed at ensuring equitable access to clean energy, promoting environmental stewardship, and empowering all residents of Snohomish County to thrive.

My legacy centers on equity, sustainability, and community empowerment in Snohomish County. I'm dedicated to ensuring equitable access to energy for all, addressing disparities among non-English speakers, low-income families, and rural communities through policies prioritizing affordability and sustainability. I aim to reduce energy poverty and improve quality of life through inclusive initiatives. Sustainability leadership is key, promoting renewable energy adoption, improving efficiency, and reducing our carbon footprint to safeguard the environment. Community engagement is foundational, advocating for transparent governance and empowering residents to shape our energy future. Economic prosperity is linked to responsible energy initiatives, supporting local job creation and partnerships for growth. Advocacy for inclusive policies aims to dismantle inequalities in energy access, ensuring fairness for all. Collaboration with stakeholders drives meaningful change, while fiscal responsibility ensures sustainable funding without financial burden. Education on sustainable practices empowers informed decision-making, enhancing community involvement.

Resilience in infrastructure prepares for climate challenges, ensuring reliability for all residents.

Upholding justice and equity values, I strive to leave a legacy of positive impact and enhanced quality of life for Snohomish County residents.

My years on the Lynnwood City Council and on the Finance Committee, have afforded me direct experience reviewing and approving multiple city biennial budgets of several hundred million dollars each. I take my duty as a steward of the people's money with prudence and I am not afraid to ask the tough questions to make an informed decision.

It is important to lookahead and plan to mitigate risks; listen to stakeholders; and go on the field to understand firsthand how efficiently monies allocated are being spent.
