Campaign website
Shannon’s campaign website stated the following:
“ |
I’m tired of the woke Left trying to cancel Americans like me who are Christians, conservatives, and capitalists. I plan to take on the woke Left, tell our kids the truth about America, and Fight for the America First agenda. Christianity T.W. Shannon stands on the courage of his convictions. And those convictions are steeped in his Christian faith. T.W. believes service is an honorable calling, and he has accepted that calling as an act of faith. Today he is offering himself in service to Oklahoma to defend faith, life, family and freedom as our conservative, Christian voice in the United States Senate. Constitution The United States Constitution ensures we have government “of the people, by the people, for the people,” enshrining our rights and liberties in this sacred compact between the government and the governed. T.W. Shannon believes constitutional rights must be protected from liberals who think it should “evolve” to meet their progressive agenda. He will be guided by constitutional principles, approve justices who give it legal deference, and ensure America is a country where personal liberty reigns supreme. As our voice, T.W. Shannon will protect our freedom of speech, freedom to worship, our right to bear arms, and the principles of federalism that reserve to states and individuals powers not enumerated to the federal government. Today he is offering himself in service to Oklahoma to defend faith, life, family and freedom as our conservative, Christian voice in the United States Senate. Capitalism T.W. Shannon is a community banker who knows American innovation, growth, and opportunity are a product of our commitment to capitalism, and a belief in free market principles where entrepreneurs are free to risk capital to create jobs, incomes, and success. T.W. will fight back against the Biden regulation regime, higher taxes that harm jobs, the terrible woke Left energy policies that stop production in Oklahoma, and the export of our energy resources abroad. T.W. Shannon will be a voice for unleashing our energy and economy to create jobs, financial security and greater national security. Pro-Life With an unwavering conviction that human life is the gift of a loving Creator, T.W. believes life starts at conception, and should be protected. He is adamantly opposed to taxpayer-funded abortion, and is taking the fight to Planned Parenthood, which targets Black communities for profit off the murder of unborn babies. In the Senate, he will be a fervent defender of life, and take on the woke left because he believes Black babies’ lives matter. Second Amendment T.W. Shannon believes the right to defend ourselves “shall not be infringed.” He believes the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to possess firearms, and defend oneself from harm. He does not believe we need new gun control laws, but to enforce the laws that are on the books. Law and Order Woke, Democrat policies have jeopardized police budgets across the country, making our communities less safe and endangering both vulnerable citizens and police officers. T.W. Shannon will push back against the “defund the police” movement, and will defend the police. He knows law enforcement is all that stands between civilized society and total chaos. As Speaker of the House in Oklahoma, T.W. Shannon defended the police, and stood for law and order. As our senator, he will bring law and order to the border, and support policing policies that make Oklahoma communities safer and freer.[8] |

Ad controversy
Coburn statement
In recent weeks, the pro-Shannon group, Oklahomans for a Conservative Future, and the pro-Lankford group, Foundation for Economic Prosperity, have released negative ads disparaging each of the candidates vying for Sen. Coburn’s seat. Coburn released the following statement about the growing negativity in the race: “When the U.S. Senate special election in Oklahoma began, I made a private commitment to James Lankford and T.W. Shannon that I would call out any ads I saw as untruthful. Last week I spoke out against political advertisements in Oklahoma unfairly and inaccurately attacking James Lankford. To be fair, I must also comment on the equally disappointing negative advertisements airing in the state by the Foundation for Economic Prosperity, Inc. attacking T.W. Shannon. They are wrong and should be rejected by Oklahomans. The negative on-air advertisements and untruthful mail pieces against both Lankford and Shannon should stop. This race should be about the urgent threats to our future well-being, not the political goals of outside interest groups.”[12]
Shannon statement
In response to negative ads released about himself and Lankford in the special election for Coburn’s Senate seat, Shannon said, “I hope everyone will agree that keeping the advertising focused on issues and records will best serve the people of Oklahoma as they determine who their next U.S. Senator should be. There are real differences between Congressman Lankford and myself when it comes to our record on debt and spending, and I welcome that discussion. But I believe that discussion should remain focused on our record, and free of images showing my opponent with President Obama. I have said this before, but it bears repeating in this instance: as brothers in Christ, Congressman Lankford and I are competitors, not enemies.”[13]
Lankford statement
Lankford responded to Shannon’s statement arguing that they were overdue and that they did not go far enough in admonishing the outside groups releasing the ads. Lankford said, “I am confident that for the past week, Oklahomans have contacted the Shannon campaign to encourage them to stop the attack ads and misrepresentations. As a result, Mr. Shannon has now issued a long overdue statement to distance himself from the TV attack ads, but apparently not the new negative attack postcards hitting mailboxes across Oklahoma today. The only item that Mr. Shannon took issue with in his statement is placing my image next to the President’s. Is Mr. Shannon supportive of the remainder of the attacks, or is he not?” [13]

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
