Four seats on the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Board of School Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

At-large incumbent Patricia Swanson ran against challengers Bix Branson, Douglas A. Chinn, Rance A. Ossenberg and Anthony W. Ricketts for one seat. Newcomer Jan Stricklin faced incumbent Christopher A. Kiefer for the District 1 seat, and Brian N. Murphy challenged board members Michael Duckworth and Andrew C. Guarino for two District 2 seats.[1][2]

Challenger Rance A. Ossenberg defeated incumbent Patricia Swanson for the at-large seat, while incumbent Christopher A. Kiefer won against challenger Jan Stricklin. In District 2, board members Michael Duckworth and Andrew C. Guarino overcame newcomer Brian N. Murphy to retain their seats.

Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation is located in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. The county seat is Evansville. Vanderburgh County is home to 181,398 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation was the third-largest school district in Indiana and served 22,799 students.[4]

Demographics

Vanderburgh County underperformed compared to the rest of Indiana in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 22.0 percent of Vanderburgh County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.0 percent for Indiana as a whole. The median household income for Vanderburgh County was $43,645 compared to $48,374 for the state of Indiana. The percentage of people below poverty level for Vanderburgh County was 15.4 percent while it was 14.7 percent for the state of Indiana.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Evansville Vanderburgh Board of School Trustees consists of seven members elected at-large or by specific geographic districts to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014, which were comprised of one at-large seat, one District 1 seat and two District 2 seats.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on July 23, 2014, and ended on August 22, 2014. Write-in candidates also had to file by August 22, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[6]

Endorsements

At-large challenger Anthony W. Ricketts, District 1 challenger Jan Stricklin and District 2 incumbents Michael Duckworth and Andrew C. Guarino received endorsements from the Central Labor Council.[7]

Stricklin also received an endorsement from state Representative Gail Riecken (D-77).[8]
