Judge keeps Capitol building open
On March 1, 2011, Judge Moeser issued a temporary restraining order to demand that officials in Wisconsin keep the Capitol building open during business hours. This ruling came after days of protests at the building in response to Governor Scott Walker's proposed end to collective bargaining with public sector labor unions.[3]
Domestic partnership does not violate law
In June 2011, Moeser ruled that the state domestic partnership registry does not violate the constitutional ban on gay marriage. The judge wrote, "The state does not recognize domestic partnership in a way that even remotely resembles how the state recognizes marriage. Moreover, domestic partners’ have far fewer legal rights, duties, and liabilities in comparison to the legal rights, duties, and liabilities of spouses."[4]
The decision was not to the liking of Wisconsin Family Action, the conservative group that filed the lawsuit challenging the registry. It has vowed to file an appeal.[4]
