June 17, 2010

Washington, D.C.: John McConnell's controversial nomination to the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 17, 2010 with a vote of 13-6. His nomination now awaits confirmation by the full Senate. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, however, is strongly opposed to McConnell's nomination and plans to count any supportive Senators' votes against them in their next annual report ranking lawmakers. Rhode Island Democratic Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse suggested McConnell for the judgeship. They called the Chamber's accusations "outlandish" and claimed that McConnell is "highly qualified in every respect."[1]
