The Judicial Update
Kentucky

January 27, 2011

Frankfort, Kentucky: On January 26, 2012 Republican house members, led by house minority floor leader Jeff Hoover, filed a suit in Franklin Circuit Court alleging that the legislative redistricting maps drawn by House Democrats are unconstitutional.[1][2] The suit seeks an injunction against the implementation of the new districts, as well as seeking to extend the filing deadline for the upcoming elections.[1] The suit alleges that the Democratic House’s new districts are unconstitutional because they divide, "too many counties, place some counties in noncontiguous districts and put some Republicans in districts with higher populations than their Democratic counterparts."[1]

Update: Judge Phillip Shepherd of the Franklin Circuit Court has pushed back the January 31st filing deadline to February 7th in state legislative races with a restraining order.[3] The ruling is in response to the lawsuit filed by house Republicans; the suit will be heard February 6th by judge Shepherd.
