Three of the seven seats on the Denton Independent School District board of trustees were up for general election on May 7, 2016. Place 4 incumbent Mia Price and Place 5 incumbent Charles Stafford ran unopposed for their seats. Newcomer Doug Chadwick ran unopposed for the Place 3 seat. This election was canceled due to lack of opposition.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Denton board of trustees consists of seven members elected by district to three-year terms. Each member resides in the single-member district they represent on the board. There was no primary election, and a general election took place on May 7, 2016, for Districts 5, 6, and 7.[2]
School board candidates were required to submit candidacy paperwork with the school district secretary by February 19, 2016. Each candidate had to be at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and a resident of the district for at least six months.[3]

Denton Independent School District is located in Denton County, and the county seat is Denton. According to the United States Census Bureau, Denton County was home to 780,612 residents between 2010 and 2015.[8] The district was the 48th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 26,312 students.[9]
Demographics
Denton County outperformed Texas as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 41.0 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.1 percent statewide. The median household income in Denton County was $74,662, compared to $52,576 for the entire state. The county poverty rate was 8.7 percent, compared to 17.2 percent for the entire state.[8]
