Three seats on the Mehlville School District school board were up for general election on April 8, 2014. Newcomers Venki Palamand, Jean Pretto and Samantha Stormer defeated incumbent Rich Franz, as well as fellow challenger Randy Howard. Incumbents Mark Stoner and Elaine Powers decided not to seek another term.

Mehlville School District is located in east-central Missouri in St. Louis County. The county seat of St. Louis County is Clayton. St. Louis County is home to 1,001,444 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Mehlville School District was the 19th-largest school district in Missouri and served 10,967 students.[2]
Demographics
St. Louis County outperformed the rest of Missouri in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 40.6 percent of St. Louis County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.2 percent for Missouri as a whole. The median household income in St. Louis County was $58,910 compared to $47,380 for the state of Missouri. The poverty rate in St. Louis County was 10.9 percent compared to 15.5 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Mehlville school board consists of seven members elected at-large to three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on April 8, 2014, for three seats. Two seats were on the ballot in 2015.
Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on December 17, 2013. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was January 21, 2014, and the deadline for candidate certification was January 28, 2014.[4]

Endorsements
Both the Mehlville Community Taxpayers for Mehlville and the Missouri National Education Association endorsed Samantha Stormer, Venki Palamand and Jean Pretto.[5][6]
Campaign finance
Randy Howard received $514 in campaign contributions and spent $457.12, leaving him with $56.88 on hand. Jean Pretto received $1,035.10 in campaign contributions and spent $501.34, leaving her with $533.76 on hand. Howard and Pretto were the only two candidates to file finance reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission.[7]

Newcomers Venki Palamand, Jean Pretto and Samantha Stormer defeated the incumbent Rich Franz, as well as fellow challenger Randy Howard. Incumbents Mark Stoner and Elaine Powers decided not to seek another term.
Issues in the district
Merit pay
In January 2014, it was announced that the Mehlville School Board was considering giving raises to teachers that met certain standards set by the Missouri School Improvement Program. Board member Elaine Powers stated that specific details had not been sorted out yet, but that it was being given serious consideration.[8]
