Ballotpedia's Daily Brew

This week's question was, How many school board recall efforts is Ballotpedia tracking so far in 2022?

You answered: 5.
The correct answer was 20.

Starting off 2022, Ballotpedia has already identified 20 school board recall efforts, equal to the total number of recall efforts identified in 2009, 2011, and 2019. It is also greater than the total number of recall efforts identified in 2017. This comes after 2021 when Ballotpedia identified 91 total school board recalls, the largest number tracked since at least 2009. When a recall effort spans multiple years, Ballotpedia counts the recall in both years, with all efforts so far in 2022 having begun last year.

Two recall elections have taken place so far in 2022 in the Leyton and Waverly 145 school districts in Nebraska. Voters rejected both efforts. Additionally, three school board recall efforts are scheduled in Newberg, Ore. (Jan. 18), San Francisco, Calif. (Feb. 15), and Giltner, Neb. (Feb. 15). The remaining recall efforts are currently underway.

The chart below details how many recall efforts were tracked each year. The 2022 numbers were current as of January 10, 2022.

Note: If a recall effort spanned multiple years, it was counted each year.
