This week's question was, How many contested state legislative primaries will Arkansas have this year?
You answered: 89.
The correct answer was 62.
From 2014 to 2020, the number of contested state legislative primaries in Arkansas, those where more than one candidate filed to run, ranged from 21 to 27. In 2022, that figure rose to 62, the largest number since 2014, representing 28% of the possible state legislative primaries.
Following the 2022 candidate filing deadline, the number of contested Republican primaries more than tripled from 2020, increasing from 16 to 52. The number of contested Democratic primaries doubled compared to 2020, from five to 10. These numbers represent the most contested primaries for each party since 2014.
As of April 29, Ballotpedia has collected state legislative primary competitiveness data from 14 states, 11 of which held major party primaries in 2020. In those 11 states, we have found a 40% increase in contested state legislative primaries compared to 2020. Broken down by party, the number of contested Republican primaries is up 72% and the number of contested Democratic primaries is down -11%.
