Ballotpedia provides comprehensive election coverage of the 100 largest cities in America by population as well as mayoral, city council, and district attorney election coverage in state capitals outside of the 100 largest cities. This court is outside of that coverage scope and does not receive scheduled updates.

The Kayenta Judicial District is a tribal court in Arizona and Utah. The courthouse is located in Kayenta, Arizona.[1]

As of February 2021, the Kayenta Judicial District was one of 11 trial-level judicial districts that made up the Navajo Nation court system.[2]

About tribal courts

There were approximately 400 tribal courts in the United States as of 2021, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior.[3] These courts can hear both criminal and civil cases regarding tribal code. Tribes that do not establish their own court may use a regional Court of Indian Offenses. These are also known as CFR Courts, since they were established by the Code of Federal Regulations.[4]

Jurisdiction

The Kayenta Judicial District is on the northern edge of the Navajo Reservation, in Arizona and Utah, with Lake Powell and the San Juan River to the north and the Hopi Reservation to the south.[2]

History

The Kayenta Judicial District was formed in 1988 as part of the original division of the Navajo Nation into seven judicial districts.[5]
