Bryan Beatty (b. March 10, 1958 in Englewood, NJ) was a Commissioner of the North Carolina Utilities Commission. He served in this position from January 7, 2009 until the completion of his term on June 30, 2017.[1]

Biography

Beatty was born in Englewood, New Jersey. He later moved to Salisbury, North Carolina, where he graduated from Salisbury High School. He earned his bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook before returning to North Carolina for his legal education, graduating in 1987 with a J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Beatty is also a graduate of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation Academy.

Before his appointment to the commission, Beatty worked in the North Carolina Department of Justice in a number of capacities. He served as an SBI agent, an associate attorney general, an assistant attorney general, the state's first inspector general, and the deputy attorney general for policy and planning. From October 1999 to January 2001, Beatty was the agency's director, and from 2001 until his appointment to the utility commission, he served as the Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.[1]

Beatty was first appointed to the North Carolina Utilities Commission on January 7, 2009, by then-Governor Mike Easley, to a term that expired on June 30, 2009. He was re-appointed by Gov. Beverly Perdue to a term that ran from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2017.[1]
