Four of the nine seats on the Fargo Public Schools Board of Education were up for at-large general election on June 14, 2016. In his bid for re-election, incumbent Jim Johnson faced eight challengers: Brandi Aune, David Gregor, Thomas Hill, Ahmed Kamel, John Rodenbiker, Doug Rymph, Kristi Ulrich, and Jacob Webster.[1] Election night results from June 14, 2016, showed Ulrich, Johnson, Aune, and Rodenbiker as the winners of the election. Due to the closeness of the race, however, there is the possibility for a demand recount, according to the North Dakota Secretary of State.[2]
In addition to Johnson's seat, the seats of incumbents Paul Meyers, Robin Nelson, and John Strand were on the ballot, but they did not file to run for re-election, meaning three seats were open for newcomers.[1]

Campaign themes
2016
Gregor highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:
“ | I am running for the School Board for several reasons. I feel that both of my children received an above average education during their years in the FPS system. I know that my daughter was well prepared for her secondary education and hope that my son will be as well, as he is attending NDSU this fall and my daughter is Graduating from UWSP with honors this spring.
With the pending financial struggles that the FPS system is looking at is one of my primary goals. I believe the current board has done a good job, but some of the people involved in the last vote for funding the mil issue failed to bring the proper message to the public. I hope that my communication skills and research can help bring that back to the public for a positive vote. I understand that ND adopted the Common Core Education values several years ago, and now are reviewing new options. Our local education system has adopted 21st Century Skills, through the Career & Technical Educational Programming system and I would wish to continue as opposed to changing formats. I believe that future education is evolving at a rapid pace due to technology, community, social, and family issues. We must stay in a proactive mode as opposed to being reactive with such things. Horizontal equity in education funding as well as Vertical equity is going to be more important as our climate changes in the near future.[5] |
