No candidates for either party had filed to run by the deadline; Dawson thus filed to run as a write-in candidate in June 7 Democratic primary in order to prevent the seat from being filled by appointment. Dawson was born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico. A teacher, she is the President of the Roswell Education Association and serves on the board of directors of the National Education Association-New Mexico.
