Man required to sit on street corner with sign to apologize for harassing neighbors
A sentence Williams-Byers handed down for Edmond Aviv included more than the usual punishments. In addition to jail time, probation, community service, anger management classes and personal counseling, Aviv was ordered to spend five hours sitting on a street corner in the community of South Euclid.[4]
He displayed a handwritten sign which described his misdeeds:
“ | I am a bully! I pick on children that are disabled, and I am intolerant of those that are different from myself. My actions do not reflect an appreciation for the diverse South Euclid community that I live in.[6] | ” |
Aviv ended up in court after a 15-year feud with his neighbors. According to The Plain Dealer, Aviv's neighbor, Sandra Prugh said during a phone interview that her family couldn't afford to move and renovate another home to make it suitable for members of her family who suffer from disabilities. She hoped the sentence Williams-Byers gave Aviv would finally allow her family to live peacefully in their home.[4]
The most recent case marks the third time Aviv has been convicted of harassing the Prughs. In addition to using racial slurs, Aviv has also harassed Prugh by spitting on her, damaging her lawn and creating a device to spew kerosene fumes toward her property.[5]
Aviv was also ordered to write a letter apologizing to Prugh. In it, he indicated he hopes they both can move forward. Aviv admitted he acted "irrationally" and failed to realize his "actions could have caused harm" to Prugh and her family.[4]
