Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Rebecca Wolfson. I am born and raised in Las Vegas. I have been a deputy city attorney for the last 7 years. I spent the first 4 years prosecuting thousands of cases in the Las Vegas Municipal Court. For the last 3 years I have been one of the attorneys who handles the City’s civil litigation, planning and land use, legislation, and code enforcement. Growing up in this community, I care about a quality of life for everyone. Stated simply, that means providing a safe community for everyone to enjoy. Public safety is my number one priority. At the same time, we must consider the needs of those less fortunate and a municipal court judge can play a vital role in providing services for the mentally ill and those suffering from addiction. As a deputy city attorney, I have been directly involved in doing just that.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Compared to my opponents, I have the most hands on experience in the Las Vegas Municipal Court. I am the only candidate with actual prosecutorial experience in the Las Vegas Municipal Court. I have spent years working with the other Municipal Court Judges and have an excellent working relationship with each of them.
A significant number of people that come before the Las Vegas Municipal Court suffer from mental health issues and or drug/alcohol/gambling addiction. One of my main goals if elected as the next Municipal Court Judge is to expand the services for those in need. Providing more mental health facilities and drug/alcohol/gambling addiction services is an essential need of the Las Vegas community.
Now more than ever, our youthful offenders are in need of services through the courts. People ages 18-25, if possible, need to be deterred from entering our criminal justice system. I believe in the positive effect of diversionary programs. If we can prevent youthful offenders from entering the system, we would be achieving a positive result not only for the youthful offender, but for the community. If elected, I would promote the expansion of diversionary programs. But at the same time holding violent and repeat offenders accountable.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Public safety is my number one priority. Working to establish more programs that can reduce our homeless population. Continuing to promote additional programs for our veterans who are in need of services.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Accessibility, honesty, fairness, compassion, and a willingness to listen to all sides. Prompt decision making is important. An open and public court for citizens. Having the right experience for the job.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Growing up in this community makes me keenly aware of its needs. For the last 7 years, each and every day, I have worked in some fashion with the Las Vegas Municipal Court. First, as a prosecutor and now as an attorney in the civil division, I am uniquely qualified to step into the position as the next Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge.

Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?

In addition to presiding over criminal cases, a Municipal Court Judge also signs every civil abatement warrant executed in the City of Las Vegas. These responsibilities directly affect the property rights of Las Vegas citizens and therefore, careful attention must be paid to balance the rights of property owners and those affected.

How would you describe your legal philosophy?

Firm, fair, and open-minded to all sides.

Is there a particular judge, past or present, whom you admire?

Having lived and worked in this community my entire life, I have come to know dozens of judges. In particular, my mother, Judge Jackie Glass, displayed to me the character traits necessary to make a great judge.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for a judge to have previous experience in government or politics?

I believe it is absolutely necessary for a judge to have actual experience in the courtroom as a lawyer.

What is your primary concern about today's legal system in your state?

Access for all. Our courts should be more accessible to those less fortunate who cannot necessarily afford their own lawyer. Equal justice must be provided to everyone. Notwithstanding their economic status.
