What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

The three main issues that concern me are Allocation, Investment, and Safety. The east side of Baltimore County needs to have the proper allocation and opportunity that Towson and the rest of the county is offered. Our facilities need attention, we have inadequate school buildings and overcrowded classrooms. We need to get more resources to the classroom. Class sizes are increasing and teachers are not able to adequately reach every student with the attention they need. With a class size of over 30 there is no way a teacher can reach every student. In every group there are different levels of learning comprehension. We need to provide the resources to offer the educational opportunity to every student. Rather than reactive we need to be proactive. The county does not invest properly in the facilities or the resources that the teachers need to have in their classrooms. Technology is an integral part of the learning process but the technology initiative that the county is pursuing is coming at the cost of adequate resources for our children. Another item that needs the attention is the behavioral issues plaguing our schools. We need to give teachers and principals enough latitude to address problems but we need to have a clear consistent across the board policy for addressing behavior. We need to make every effort to keep kids in classrooms and learning but there comes a point where to be fair to the rest of the students we have to remove that child. Some children are going to need more resources than the standard comprehensive classroom can offer. Students need to be held accountable for their actions. We need discipline and consequences for behavior!

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Public education is like a three legged table upon which the school system foundation is built with the administration, the board, and the community holding equal importance to an effective school system. Removing any of those legs, or decreasing their importance makes the foundation topple. Right now we have an administration which directs the board, and seeks no community input at all. By electing me to the School Board I will work to change that providing more Community involvement, Oversight, Accountability, and Transparency. The Administration, the Board, and the community need to all work together for the benefit of the kids. It is vitally important for each to provide checks and balances on the others. Contracts should be fully investigated and properly vetted by the board. The current way that the board has done things has led the board to lose the support of community and trust of those they are called on to represent. Transparency is one of my core tenants, the process for bidding needs to be completely open to scrutiny and not hidden from the public. An independent audit is needed to start to help restore confidence in the system. We need to be made completely aware of where our money is going. The school system is funded by the taxes that we pay. We have every right to expect that our tax dollars are being spent effectively and not being decided behind closed doors.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Kathleen Causey, Ann Miller, Julie Henn, and Roger Hayden (current members on the board of education) are great examples of who I look up to. They are consistently looking out for the best interests of the Baltimore County students. Often they are in the minority when voting but they continue to fight and advocate for the kids. They are constantly asking the questions that need to be asked, even if they never get answers. I am honored to have their guidance, support, and endorsement of my campaign.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am a Dundalk native who went to Norwood Elementary and then Holabird Middle School before transitioning to the Parkville High School Magnet Program. I have served and continue to serve on various boards and work with numerous organizations in my community. These interactions have taught me to understand what it takes to work with and for a diverse group of people with different backgrounds and personalities. I have always been willing to collaborate and contribute to an open dialogue. I have the dedication to spend the time necessary to be well informed and knowledgeable on the issues. It would be my responsibility, and one that I would take seriously, to learn as much as possible on each issue and prepare well in advance of meetings. This would enable me to focus on listening and not just participating. I will always work hard and ask myself 3 questions before I vote on any matter. First, will it be good for the students? Second, will it be fiscally responsible for the taxpayers. And third, does it empower the teachers to be able to do their jobs in a professional manner? In Baltimore County we have a top down funding and management style, we need to empower teachers to make some classroom decisions and provide them the resources they need to be effective educators. My community is very important to me and I have a genuine heart, as demonstrated by my various involvements within the community, all of which is done in a volunteer capacity.
