William Herauf is the acting presiding judge for the Southwest Judicial District of North Dakota. Herauf is based out of Dickinson, North Dakota, which is located in Stark County. Governor John Hoeven (R) appointed Herauf to the position on August 2, 2006. He filled the vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Ron Hilden.[1]

Herauf won re-election to a new six-year term in 2016.

Herauf earned his B.A. in marketing from the University of North Dakota in 1979 and his J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1982. He practiced law in Dickinson from 1982 until 2006. He worked for firms such as Mackoff Kellogg and Reichert & Herauf, P.C. He also previously served as assistant city attorney for the City of Dickinson between 1985 and 1990, and as Slope County state's attorney for one and a half years.[2][3]

There were 23 North Dakota District Court seats up for election in 2016, all of the seats appeared on the June 14, 2016, primary ballot. There were four contested races that appeared on the ballot for the general election on November 8, 2016. Two of the contested races had open seats where the sitting judge did not seek re-election.

Herauf was re-elected to the Southeast Judicial District of North Dakota. He received 99.60 percent of the vote.[4]
