Alan Z. Thornburg (Democratic Party) is a judge for Judicial District 28 of the North Carolina 5th Superior Court Division. He assumed office on January 1, 2019. His current term ends on December 31, 2026.

Thornburg (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for the Judicial District 28 judge of the North Carolina 5th Superior Court Division. He won in the general election on November 6, 2018.

Thornburg was initially a superior court judge for the 28th Judicial District of the Eighth Division of the Superior Court.[1] Thornburg was appointed to the court by Governor Mike Easley in January 2009 and was elected to the position in November 2010.[2]

In 2018, the North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 717, revising the state superior court, district court, and prosecutorial districts. Thornburg's seat on the Eighth Division was absorbed into the Fifth Division.

The North Carolina Superior Courts are split into five divisions and 48 districts. Superior court judges rotate among the districts within their division every six months.[3] However, superior court judges are elected by voters in their district and must reside in the district in which they are elected.[4]

Education

He received his B.A. in history from Davidson College in 1989 and his law degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1996.[5]

Career

Thornburg began his law career in private practice, while serving as an aide to U.S. Senator Terry Sanford from 1997 to 2004. In 2004, he was appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. After losing the next election to Barbara Jackson, he was appointed to the North Carolina Board of Transportation in 2005. Next, he was appointed to the 28th Judicial District Superior Court in 2009.[5]
