I am Aaron Reveles, a dedicated educator and social justice advocate with nearly eight years of teaching experience in the Los Angeles area. Currently, I teach Social Studies at Obama Global Prep Academy in Los Angeles Unified School District. I hold a BA in History from UC Santa Barbara and a Master's in Education from Johns Hopkins University.

My passion for public education began during my time with City Year AmeriCorps, where I supported students in developing essential social and academic skills. As a proud union member with United Teachers Los Angeles, I have actively campaigned for equitable education and the rights of students, teachers, and our community.

I am running for the Montebello Unified School District Board to prioritize transparency in our school finances, enhance student achievement, and promote environmental justice. I believe in creating a more democratic school board by advocating for ranked-choice voting and ensuring that all voices in our community are heard. Together, we can build a brighter future for our students and our district.
  • Prioritizing Student Success: I am committed to improving educational outcomes for all students in the Montebello Unified School District. This includes advocating for increased resources, supportive learning environments, and programs that address the diverse needs of our student population.
  • Democratizing the School Board: I believe in creating a more inclusive and transparent school board that truly represents our community. By pushing for ranked-choice voting and holding regular town halls, I will ensure that parents, teachers, and community members have a voice in decision-making processes.
  • Supporting Workers and Teachers: I am dedicated to advocating for fair wages and benefits for teachers and staff, recognizing that their well-being is essential for creating a thriving educational environment. I will work to retain qualified educators and support their professional development, ensuring that our students receive the best education possible.
I am passionate about several key areas of public policy that impact our students and community. First, I advocate for education equity, ensuring that all students have access to quality education and resources, regardless of their background. Second, I prioritize worker and teacher rights, fighting for fair wages and supportive working conditions to retain qualified educators, as their well-being directly affects student success. Lastly, I am committed to environmental justice, promoting sustainable practices in our schools and addressing the disproportionate impact of environmental issues on marginalized communities. Together, we can create a thriving educational environment for all.
I look up to Fred Hampton and Eugene Debs, as both exemplified strong leadership and a commitment to social justice. Fred Hampton, a prominent figure in the Black Panther Party, inspired many with his ability to unite diverse groups around common goals, advocating for community empowerment and the fight against systemic oppression. His dedication to grassroots organizing and education serves as a powerful example of how to effect change from the ground up.

Eugene Debs, a founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World and a perennial presidential candidate, championed workers' rights and socialism in America. His fearless advocacy for the working class and his commitment to social and economic equality resonate deeply with my own values. Both of these figures exemplify the importance of standing up for what is right, challenging the status quo, and working towards a more equitable society. Their legacies inspire me to pursue social justice and democratic ideals in my own work
Here’s a response you could use for this question:

I would recommend "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" by Paulo Freire to anyone who wants to understand my political philosophy. Freire’s work emphasizes the importance of education as a tool for liberation and social justice. His ideas about empowering marginalized communities through critical thinking and active participation align with my belief that schools should not only educate students academically but also inspire them to challenge injustice and advocate for change.

Additionally, I would recommend the film "Salt of the Earth" (1954), a powerful portrayal of a miners' strike led by Mexican-American workers fighting for fair wages and dignity. The film highlights themes of class struggle, workers’ rights, and community solidarity—core principles that shape my advocacy for labor rights, equitable education, and justice for all marginalized groups.
For an elected official, several key characteristics and principles are essential. Integrity is crucial, as maintaining honesty and transparency builds trust with the community and ensures decisions are made in the public’s best interest. Equally important is accountability—officials must be responsible for their actions, follow through on their promises, and remain open to feedback from constituents. A strong commitment to equity is vital for ensuring that all voices, especially those from marginalized communities, are heard and represented in decision-making processes. Collaboration is another key principle, as working together with diverse groups, including community members, educators, and students, leads to solutions that benefit everyone. Lastly, an elected official should possess vision, focusing on long-term progress and sustainability for the community. These principles guide officials to serve as true representatives, dedicated to improving the lives of all in their district.
I believe several qualities I possess would make me a successful officeholder. First and foremost, I am deeply committed to social justice and equity, which drives my passion for public service and advocacy for marginalized communities. My experience as a teacher has equipped me with strong communication skills, allowing me to listen to diverse perspectives and engage effectively with constituents.

Additionally, I am a collaborative leader who values teamwork and community input in decision-making processes. I believe that inclusivity fosters better solutions and strengthens the bond between the school district and the community it serves. My ability to analyze complex issues and think critically helps me develop effective policies that address the needs of students, faculty, and families.

Furthermore, my dedication to transparency and accountability ensures that I prioritize the interests of the community over personal or political agendas. Finally, my resilience and adaptability enable me to navigate challenges and remain focused on long-term goals, ensuring that I can respond effectively to the evolving needs of the district. These qualities, combined with my commitment to education and community empowerment, position me to serve effectively as a member of the Montebello Unified School District Board.
The core responsibilities for someone elected to the Montebello Unified School District Board are centered on serving the students, educators, and the broader community. First and foremost, ensuring student success is paramount. This involves creating policies that support equitable access to quality education, addressing the diverse needs of our student population, and fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment.

Another key responsibility is maintaining fiscal transparency and accountability. School board members must ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely, prioritizing investments that directly benefit students and educators while keeping the community informed about budget decisions.

Supporting educators and staff is also essential. A school board member must advocate for fair wages, benefits, and working conditions to retain and attract talented educators. Providing the resources teachers need to succeed ensures that students receive the best possible education.

Additionally, the school board should engage with the community, actively listening to parents, teachers, staff, and students to understand their concerns and ideas. Collaboration with the community is crucial for making informed decisions that reflect the needs and values of those served by the district.

Finally, school board members are responsible for long-term planning and governance, setting a clear vision for the district's future and ensuring that policies are aligned with the district's goals. This includes addressing issues like infrastructure, sustainability, and educational innovation to prepare students for future success.
I would like to leave a legacy of equity, empowerment, and community engagement in the Montebello Unified School District. My goal is to create a school environment where every student has access to quality education and resources, regardless of their background. I envision a district where parents and community members are actively involved in decision-making processes, fostering a sense of ownership and collaboration.

I want to ensure that policies reflect the diverse needs of our students and that mental health support, social justice, and environmental sustainability are prioritized. By promoting transparency and accountability in the district's operations, I hope to build trust within the community and encourage more parents and residents to engage with the school system.

Ultimately, I aspire to leave behind a more inclusive and supportive educational environment that prepares students not only academically but also as informed and engaged citizens. If I can contribute to a culture of empowerment and social responsibility, I believe that would be a meaningful and lasting legacy.
The first historical event that I remember is the 2000 election. I was 6 years old at the time, and my parents voted for Ralph Nader. I recall the discussions at home about the election, the significance of voting, and how different candidates represented various values and issues. This early exposure to political discourse shaped my understanding of democracy and civic engagement from a young age.
My very first job was working at Kmart during college, and I held that position for about a year. This experience taught me valuable skills in customer service, time management, and teamwork, which have been helpful in my later roles in education and organizing.
One of my favorite books is State and Revolution by Vladimir Lenin. I appreciate it for its deep exploration of the relationship between the state and the working class in the context of revolutionary change. Lenin’s arguments about the necessity of dismantling oppressive structures and establishing a government that truly represents the people's interests resonate with my political beliefs.

The book’s analysis of how a revolution can transform society, coupled with its emphasis on the importance of class struggle, provides valuable insights into the challenges we face in our pursuit of social justice. It serves as a critical reminder of the need for organized action and solidarity among the working class, inspiring me to advocate for meaningful change within my community and beyond.
If I could be any fictional character, I would choose to be Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus embodies integrity, empathy, and a strong sense of justice, standing up for what is right even in the face of adversity. His commitment to defending the innocent and educating his children about morality and compassion resonates with my values. I admire his ability to remain calm and rational in challenging situations, and I would love to follow in his footsteps by advocating for social justice and equality in my own life.
The last song that got stuck in my head was "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes. Its iconic riff and driving beat are instantly recognizable, making it a track that lingers in my mind long after I hear it. The song’s themes of determination and resilience really resonate, and it always motivates me to keep pushing forward.
One significant struggle in my life has been navigating the challenges of balancing my personal and professional commitments. As a dedicated educator, I often find myself deeply invested in my students' success, which can lead to long hours and emotional exhaustion. At the same time, I strive to maintain meaningful relationships with family and friends and stay involved in my community.

This struggle has taught me the importance of self-care and time management. I’ve learned to prioritize my well-being while remaining committed to my responsibilities. Additionally, it has reinforced my belief in the importance of support systems—whether through colleagues, mentors, or community members—who can provide guidance and encouragement during difficult times. This experience has shaped my understanding of the challenges many families face, motivating me to advocate for policies that support not just students but also their families and educators within the school system.
In my view, the primary job of a school board member is to ensure that the district provides a high-quality, equitable education for all students. This involves setting clear policies that support student success, advocating for resources that meet the diverse needs of the district, and fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment. School board members must also be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars, ensuring transparency and accountability in budgeting and financial decisions. Additionally, they must collaborate with educators, parents, and the community, listening to their concerns and involving them in decisions that impact the district. Ultimately, the role of a school board member is to serve as a bridge between the community and the schools, ensuring that all voices are heard and that the district remains focused on delivering excellent education.
My constituents include a wide range of people within the Montebello Unified School District community. First and foremost, the students are at the heart of everything I do, as they deserve the best education, resources, and opportunities to thrive. The teachers and staff who work tirelessly to educate and support our students are also key constituents, as they need fair wages, professional development, and a supportive work environment.

Additionally, I serve the parents and guardians who entrust the district with their children’s education and want to see transparency and accountability from the school board. Finally, the community members—taxpayers, local organizations, and advocates—are also my constituents, as they have a stake in the success of our schools and the future of our community. My goal is to represent all these voices and work toward policies that benefit everyone.
To support the diverse needs of the Montebello Unified School District’s students, faculty, staff, and community, I would focus on a few key areas:

For students, I would prioritize equitable access to resources, such as technology, tutoring, and mental health services, ensuring that every student—regardless of background—has the support they need to succeed. I would also advocate for culturally responsive curricula that reflect the diversity of our student body, ensuring all students see themselves represented in their education.

For faculty and staff, I would push for fair wages, professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment. Ensuring that our educators and support staff have what they need to thrive is crucial for retaining talented individuals who make a direct impact on students.

For the community, I would foster open communication and create opportunities for parents, guardians, and local organizations to have a voice in district decisions. This would include hosting regular town halls and ensuring transparency in district policies and finances. By listening to all stakeholders, we can create solutions that meet the unique needs of our diverse community.

Ultimately, supporting diversity means recognizing and valuing the different strengths, challenges, and perspectives each group brings to the table and implementing policies that serve everyone fairly.
Building strong relationships with the broader community is essential for creating a school district that truly reflects the needs of its students, families, and educators. I plan to do this through consistent engagement, transparency, and collaboration.

First, I will establish open lines of communication by regularly hosting town halls and community forums. These events will rotate across different neighborhoods in the district to ensure accessibility for everyone. I also plan to maintain a strong presence on social media and other digital platforms, making it easy for community members to share feedback and ask questions.

I will specifically target and build partnerships with parent-teacher associations (PTAs), local labor unions, and teacher advocacy groups, as they play a critical role in shaping the educational environment. Cultural organizations that represent our diverse community, such as Latino advocacy groups and immigrant rights organizations, will be key to ensuring we meet the needs of all families. I also plan to work closely with student groups to give young people a voice in decision-making.

Additionally, I will collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits to create internship opportunities, mentorship programs, and community services that benefit both students and the broader community. Lastly, environmental organizations will be key partners in implementing sustainable practices within the district, aligning with my commitment to environmental justice.

By actively listening to these diverse groups and fostering partnerships, I will ensure that the school board’s work is inclusive and responsive to the needs of everyone in the district.
Good teaching is characterized by several key elements: a deep understanding of the subject matter, the ability to engage and inspire students, and a commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Effective teachers employ a variety of instructional strategies tailored to meet the diverse needs of their students, fostering critical thinking and encouraging collaboration.

To measure good teaching, I would focus on multiple indicators, including student performance and progress, classroom observations, and feedback from students, parents, and colleagues. Standardized assessments can provide some insights, but I also believe in using formative assessments and projects to gauge students’ understanding and skills in real-world contexts. Additionally, teacher self-reflection and peer evaluations can help identify areas for improvement and highlight successful practices.

Supporting advanced teaching approaches involves providing professional development opportunities that expose educators to innovative strategies and best practices. I would advocate for workshops, coaching, and collaborative planning sessions that encourage teachers to experiment with new methodologies, such as project-based learning, inquiry-based instruction, and the integration of technology. Creating a culture of continuous improvement, where teachers feel empowered to share their successes and challenges, will further enhance teaching quality across the district.

By prioritizing these elements, we can cultivate an environment that supports good teaching and ultimately leads to improved student outcomes.
I believe there are several key areas where we can expand the curriculum in the Montebello Unified School District to better prepare our students for the future and reflect the diverse needs of our community.

First, I see a significant need for advanced technical training and apprenticeships, particularly in fields such as information technology, healthcare, and the skilled trades. Partnering with local businesses and community colleges to create internship and apprenticeship programs would provide students with valuable hands-on experience and help bridge the gap between education and the workforce.

Additionally, I would advocate for expanding our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum to include innovative programming like coding, robotics, and environmental science. This not only aligns with current job market demands but also equips students with essential skills for a rapidly changing world.

Another critical area for expansion is the inclusion of California history and culture in our social studies curriculum. By integrating local history, including the contributions of diverse communities and significant events that have shaped our state, students can develop a deeper understanding of their own identities and the world around them. This could involve project-based learning initiatives that encourage students to explore their local history through research, field trips, and community engagement.

Finally, I would support the introduction of social-emotional learning (SEL) and mental health education as integral components of the curriculum. Teaching students to manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, and develop resilience is essential for their overall well-being and success in both academics and life.

By expanding the curriculum in these areas, we can create a more relevant, engaging, and inclusive educational experience that prepares our students for a bright future.
To ensure that schools in the Montebello Unified School District are properly funded, I would advocate for a multi-faceted approach that includes actively engaging with state legislators and local government officials to lobby for increased funding, particularly through equitable funding formulas that address the diverse needs of our student population. Building strong community support is crucial, so I would organize informational sessions and town hall meetings to educate parents and stakeholders about the funding challenges our schools face. Additionally, I would explore grant opportunities from federal, state, and private sources while collaborating with local businesses and organizations to create partnerships that provide additional resources. If necessary, I would advocate for bond measures to fund critical infrastructure improvements and educational programs, ensuring that clear messaging about the benefits of investing in our schools is communicated. Transparency in budgeting and financial decisions is vital to building trust within the community, so I would support regular public reporting on the district’s finances. Finally, utilizing data-driven approaches to demonstrate the impact of increased funding on student performance can strengthen our case for financial support. By implementing these strategies, I aim to create a sustainable funding model that ensures our schools have the necessary resources to provide a high-quality education for all students in the district.
The principles that drive my policies for safety in schools are grounded in comprehensive prevention, community engagement, and mental health support.

First and foremost, I believe in a proactive approach to safety that focuses on preventing incidents before they occur. This involves implementing comprehensive safety plans that include regular safety drills, clear emergency procedures, and ongoing training for staff and students. It’s essential to create an environment where everyone is aware of safety protocols and feels empowered to act.

Community engagement is another key principle. I would prioritize collaboration with local law enforcement, mental health professionals, and community organizations to ensure that safety measures are well-informed and tailored to the specific needs of our schools. This partnership can help create a supportive environment that fosters trust and communication between students, staff, and law enforcement.

Additionally, I believe in prioritizing mental health support for students. Recognizing that many safety issues stem from underlying mental health challenges, I would advocate for increased access to counselors, social workers, and mental health resources within our schools. By addressing these issues early on, we can help prevent situations that could escalate into crises.

Finally, I would emphasize the importance of creating a positive school culture where respect, inclusion, and support are central values. When students feel safe, valued, and connected to their peers and teachers, they are less likely to engage in harmful behaviors. By fostering a strong sense of community and belonging, we can enhance safety and well-being in our schools.

These principles collectively guide my approach to ensuring a safe and nurturing learning environment for all students.
Supporting the mental health needs of students, faculty, and staff is a top priority, and I would implement a comprehensive approach that includes increasing access to mental health resources by hiring additional counselors, psychologists, and social workers within the district to ensure everyone has support. Incorporating mental health education into the curriculum for both students and staff is essential to promote awareness and understanding, reducing stigma and encouraging help-seeking behaviors. Establishing safe spaces within schools allows individuals to express their feelings and concerns without judgment, providing a calm area for reflection and support. For faculty and staff, I would advocate for policies that promote work-life balance, such as flexible scheduling and mental health days, as their well-being directly impacts classroom effectiveness. Implementing peer support programs can foster a sense of community among students and staff, creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable discussing mental health challenges. Lastly, partnering with local mental health organizations can enhance support through additional services, workshops, and outreach programs. By implementing these strategies, I aim to create a supportive and responsive environment that addresses the mental health needs of all individuals within the Montebello Unified School District, ultimately fostering a healthier, more productive school community.
Why did the scarecrow win an award?
Because he was outstanding in his field!
As a candidate for the Montebello Unified School District, I would focus on changing existing policies and implementing new ones to better serve our students, staff, and community. First, I would advocate for revising resource allocation policies to ensure equitable distribution of funding and resources among schools, prioritizing underfunded institutions and programs that serve marginalized students. Additionally, I would push for comprehensive mental health policies that increase the number of counselors, provide mental health education, and establish protocols for identifying and supporting at-risk individuals. Enhancing transparency in district decision-making processes, particularly regarding budgeting and spending, is also a priority; this could include regular public reports on financial allocations and engaging community members in discussions about budget priorities. Furthermore, I would implement policies to encourage greater parent and community involvement in school governance, such as regular town hall meetings and advisory councils with parent representatives. Expanding the curriculum to include more diverse perspectives, such as California history, mental health education, and career technical education (CTE), is crucial for better preparing students for the future. Finally, I would advocate for comprehensive safety policies addressing both physical and emotional safety in schools, including emergency preparedness and measures to foster a positive school climate that prevents bullying and promotes inclusivity. By changing existing policies and implementing these new initiatives, I aim to create a more equitable, transparent, and supportive educational environment for all members of the Montebello Unified School District.
My ideal learning environment for students is one that is inclusive, engaging, and supportive, fostering both academic and personal growth. It features flexible learning spaces that can accommodate various teaching styles and activities, allowing for collaboration, creativity, and hands-on learning. Classrooms would be equipped with modern technology and resources to facilitate interactive lessons and cater to diverse learning needs.

In this environment, students feel safe and respected, free to express their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgment. Culturally relevant curricula that reflect the backgrounds and experiences of all students would be integral, helping them connect with the material on a deeper level.

Additionally, strong relationships between students and educators would be emphasized, with teachers serving as mentors and guides who support students’ individual learning journeys. There would also be a focus on social-emotional learning, ensuring that students develop skills such as resilience, empathy, and teamwork.

Lastly, the ideal learning environment encourages community involvement, integrating parents, local organizations, and other stakeholders into the educational process. This holistic approach not only enhances academic success but also prepares students to be active, engaged members of their communities.
The handling of the coronavirus pandemic by the Montebello Unified School District highlighted both strengths and areas for improvement. While the district took commendable steps to transition to remote learning quickly and ensure continuity of education, there were challenges that affected students, families, and staff.

One significant issue was the lack of sufficient technology and internet access for all students, which created disparities in learning experiences. In the future, I would prioritize investing in infrastructure to ensure that every student has access to necessary devices and reliable internet, allowing for equitable participation in online learning.

Additionally, communication with parents and the community could have been more transparent and timely. I would implement regular updates and feedback mechanisms to keep all stakeholders informed and involved in decision-making processes. Building stronger connections with families and providing clear guidelines on safety protocols would enhance trust and cooperation during any future crises.

Finally, addressing the mental health impact of the pandemic is essential. While some resources were made available, I would advocate for expanded mental health support for both students and staff to help them navigate the challenges brought on by the pandemic. By learning from the experiences of the coronavirus pandemic, we can develop more resilient systems that better support our school community in the future.
Building a strong relationship with parents is essential to creating a successful and inclusive school environment. I plan to achieve this by prioritizing open communication, transparency, and collaboration.

First, I will hold regular town halls and listening sessions to give parents a direct platform to voice their concerns, share ideas, and ask questions. These meetings will be held in various locations across the district to make them accessible to all parents. I will also use social media and email newsletters to keep parents informed about important decisions, upcoming events, and opportunities for involvement.

In addition to public meetings, I will establish parent advisory councils that meet regularly to discuss district policies and initiatives. These councils will allow parents from diverse backgrounds and communities to directly influence decision-making and ensure their voices are heard.

I will also focus on language accessibility, providing translations and interpreters for all communications and events, so that non-English-speaking parents are fully included in the process. This is particularly important in a diverse district like ours, where many families speak Spanish and other languages at home.

Lastly, I will ensure that the district maintains a welcoming and supportive environment for all parents, encouraging them to engage in their children’s education and be active participants in school life. By fostering a culture of trust and inclusion, we can work together to support our students and create the best possible learning environment.
My preferred strategies for recruiting faculty, staff, and administration in the Montebello Unified School District focus on attracting diverse, talented individuals committed to our students and community. First, I would prioritize diverse hiring practices to ensure our staff reflects the backgrounds and experiences of our student population. This includes actively seeking candidates from underrepresented communities and establishing partnerships with local universities, colleges, and teacher preparation programs to create internship and residency opportunities that build a pipeline of talent from our area. Additionally, I would advocate for competitive salaries and benefits to attract and retain high-quality educators, along with creating a positive and supportive work culture that includes mentorship programs and ongoing professional development. Ensuring transparent and inclusive hiring processes, with input from current staff and community members, will help build trust and engagement. Finally, highlighting the district's commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice in recruitment materials will attract candidates who share those values and are dedicated to making a positive impact on our students and community.
I believe financial transparency and government accountability are fundamental to maintaining public trust and ensuring that elected officials serve the community effectively. In the context of the Montebello Unified School District, it’s crucial that the budget and financial decisions are open, clear, and accessible to all stakeholders—students, parents, teachers, and community members alike. This includes regularly publishing detailed reports, holding open forums, and ensuring that every dollar is spent in a way that directly benefits students and educators.

Government accountability goes hand in hand with transparency. Elected officials must be held responsible for the decisions they make, especially when those decisions involve public funds. I am committed to ensuring that the school board remains accountable to the community it serves by advocating for open, regular communication and being transparent about policies, budget allocations, and district priorities. My goal is to build a district where financial responsibility is aligned with the best interests of the community, and where every voice is heard and respected.
