Campaign themes
2017
Karrfalt's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[4]
Repurposing
- Excerpt: "In collaboration with community leaders, property owners, neighborhood residents, and the County Land Bank, I will develop a plan to evaluate blighted properties. Together, we can determine whether or not properties can be renovated for occupancy, or should be slated for demolition. Ideally, homes would be restored to livable condition, but when they cannot be saved, these lots could be turned into community gardens or other green spaces as determined by the needs of the community."
Education
- Excerpt: "As someone in the field of education, I know the importance of having the best tools and skills at your disposal to effectively facilitate the education of students. For years, there has been a steady decline in school funding from the state and city. Many of the schools in our city are at least 40-50 years old and in dire need of attention."
Infrastructure
- Excerpt: "Systemic infrastructure improvements are also desperately needed in our Ward. We need to improve our roads, sidewalks, and water/sewer systems, among many other things. As I’m sure you’re aware, the state of the roads in the city of Cleveland is abysmal. The average cost of auto repair due to poor road conditions in Cleveland is approximately $651 per year (https://www.cnbc.com/2015/07/23/bad-roads-cost-car-owners-billions-report.html). As your Councilman, I plan to institute an ongoing inventory of the roads in the Ward, so that crucial improvements can be made in a timely fashion."
Policing
- Excerpt: "Safety is a big concern for everyone living in Ward 15 as well as the entire city of Cleveland. People want to be able to walk down the street at night without the fear of being robbed or assaulted. They also have a right to rely on an expertly trained police force that they feel serves the community and offers real protection. In too many instances, current Police training has lead to tragic outcomes. A safe community relies on cooperation and trust between the citizens and the police department. That is why, as your Councilman, I will work with community leaders and the police department to come up with ways to improve the relationship between the citizens and the police without creating further mistrust."
