Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Arkansas Department of Education reads:[1]

Superintendent
The current Arkansas Commissioner of Education is Jacob Oliva (nonpartisan). Oliva assumed office in 2023.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education is composed of nine voting members, all of whom are appointed by the Governor of Arkansas for seven-year terms. Of the nine members, one serves as an at-large representative and the other eight serve as representatives of separate geographical districts. These districts correspond with the federal congressional districts, with two members coming from each of the four districts. The State Board of Education appoints the state's Commissioner of Education, who also serves as the secretary of the board. Both the Commissioner of Education and the Arkansas Teacher of the Year serve as non-voting members of the board. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.[3]
