This week's question was, What was the average number of state trifectas between 1992 and 2022?

You answered: 12
That's correct!

Between 1992 and 2022, an average of 12 states—12.19 to be exact—had a Republican or Democratic trifecta each year. A state government trifecta is a term to describe single-party government, when one political party holds the governorship and majorities in both chambers of the state legislature.

As of November 9, 2023, there are 22 Republican trifectas, 17 Democratic trifectas, and 11 divided governments where neither party holds trifecta control.

There were five trifectas—one Democratic, one Republican, and three divided governments—on the ballot in 2023. On October 14, 2023, Jeff Landry (R) won election as Governor of Louisiana. When he is sworn in, Louisiana will change from a divided government to a Republican trifecta. This will be the only trifecta change after the 2023 elections.

When Landry takes office in 2024, there will be 40 trifectas—the most since at least 1992. Between 1992 and 2022, the most trifectas for each party were 18 for Democrats (1993) and 26 for Republicans (2018).
