Candidates seek Magistrate and Probate judgeships in Sandoval County
May 23, 2010
Rio Rancho, New Mexico: Two candidates will be competing for the open Sandoval County Magistrate Judge position (Division I) in the June 1, 2010 primary election. Richard Zanotti is a former Sandoval County Magistrate Judge for Division III. After losing a re-election bid in 2006, he began serving as a pro tem judge on this court and heard cases in various jurisdictions pro bono. He is running against Dixie Trebbe, a former adult probation officer who has done extensive volunteer work for the Democratic party. It is her first time running for public office. There are no Republican candidates, so the primary will decide the winner of the race.
There is also a position open on the Sandoval County Probate Court. Incumbent Charles J. Aguilar is seeking to retain the position he's held for four years. Aguilar was previously the mayor of Bernalillo, New Mexico. His opponent in the June 1st Democratic primary is Stevan Schoen. Schoen is a probate lawyer who served as a probate judge from 1991 to 1998. He said that he is the most experienced candidate and will try to ensure greater budget efficiency. The winner of the Democratic primary will face Mary Kwapich, the only Republican in this race, in the November 2, 2010 general election. She has also served on this court in the past, working as a probate judge from 1999 to 2006.[1]
