Attorney Canty lost the supreme court bid.

Canty was one of 11 attorneys that submitted applications to the Montana Judicial Nominating Commission which forwarded their top three recommendations for the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court to Governor Schweitzer.

The nominees were Canty, John S. Warren and Michael E. Wheat. Schweitzer had 30 days to review the candidates, and make his selection. The appointee would take office in January of 2010 and run in the November 2010 general election so they could serve out the remainder of Warner's term, which expires December 31, 2014.[1]

Canty credits his varied experiences with the law as giving him the background necessary to hit the ground running if placed on the court. "I am one of a very fortunate few to have experienced working on cases in every corner of Montana and all points in between - from advising law enforcement in the course of response to the initial incident, through trial and litigation to conclusion on appeal. Through the quality of this experience, I have gained an appreciation for the circumstances that bring people before the court."[2]

Education

Canty attended Cambridge University in England and earned his undergraduate degree from Carroll College and his law degree from the University of San Francisco.[3]

Career

Canty has been in private practice with the law firm Browning, Kaleczyc, Berry and Hoven since 2008. Prior to that, he spent six years an assistant Montana attorney general under Mike McGrath. For 11 years prior to that Canty worked as a deputy county attorney in Butte-Silver Bow County. He also served as a special assistant U.S. attorney and assistant to the chief staff attorney of the judiciary of the state of Hawaii.[4]
