Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Cherish DesRochers-Vafeados, and I have proudly served the people of Battle Ground on the City Council since 2016, including time as Deputy Mayor. I was first appointed to the council, then elected by our community in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.

Battle Ground has been my home since 1990. I attended Battle Ground Public Schools and have worked at C-Tran since 2010, where I’ve gained valuable experience in public service, teamwork, and the importance of reliable infrastructure that keeps our community connected.

During my time on council, I’ve focused on fiscal responsibility, public safety, reducing city debt, improving roads, and supporting the Utility Rate Reduction Program for Low-Income Seniors. These accomplishments reflect my belief that government should be transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people it serves.

I’m running for re-election because I care deeply about preserving Battle Ground’s small-town feeling while planning responsibly for the future. My top priorities remain keeping our community safe, maintaining essential services, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used wisely.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

• Public safety is the foundation of a strong community. I believe our residents deserve a city that invests in law enforcement, emergency services, and safe neighborhoods so everyone can feel secure where they live and work.
• Fiscal responsibility has guided every decision I’ve made on the council. I’m proud to have supported budgets that reduce city debt, maintain essential services, and keep taxes low while ensuring we continue to grow responsibly.
• Finally, I’m passionate about preserving the small-town feeling that makes Battle Ground special. As our city grows, I’ll continue working to protect the sense of community, connection, and belonging that defines who we are.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I believe every resident deserves to feel safe, so supporting our police and first responders is a top priority. I am also committed to fiscal responsibility, ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent wisely while maintaining essential services and keeping city finances strong.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

believe the most important characteristics for an elected official are integrity, accountability, and a commitment to public service. An official should be honest, transparent, and trustworthy, making decisions based on what is best for the community rather than personal gain.

Responsiveness and accessibility are also critical — leaders must listen to residents, understand their concerns, and act on their priorities.

Finally, a successful official must be pragmatic and solutions-oriented, able to work collaboratively with others, balance competing needs, and make fiscally responsible decisions that strengthen the community for everyone.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The core responsibilities of someone elected to the City Council are to represent the interests of the community, make informed and fair decisions, and ensure the city’s resources are used responsibly.

Council members must listen to residents, understand their needs, and advocate for policies that improve public safety, maintain essential services, and enhance quality of life. They are also responsible for oversight of the city’s budget, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and effectively.

Finally, elected officials must preserve the character and sense of community that makes Battle Ground unique, balancing growth and progress with the small-town feeling residents value.

What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?

One accomplishment I am especially proud of is spearheading the Utility Rate Reduction Program for Low-Income Seniors. This program helps make essential services more affordable for seniors on fixed incomes, ensuring they can stay in their homes and maintain their independence.

It reflects my commitment to fiscal responsibility, community support, and public service, and demonstrates how thoughtful policy can have a meaningful, positive impact on the lives of residents.
