The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was May 28, 2014. Martin Quezada defeated Lydia Hernandez in the Democratic primary. Crystal Nuttle was unopposed in the Republican primary. Quezada defeated Nuttle in the general election.[6][7][8][9]

Noteworthy events
Custodial interference case
Nuttle was charged with custodial interference in August 2013 after she and three other women, including her campaign manager, allegedly helped another woman steal her child from a secure Child Protective Services facility. The child was later found unharmed. Custodial interference is a felony and carries a potential jail sentence.[10]
