Campaign themes

Bates answered the following about his campaign in a July 2014 interview with the Columbia Daily Herald:[2]

How would you characterize the current relationship between school board and county commission? What would you do to maintain or change it?
We all have an interest in having the best schools possible, which will attract better paying jobs, which will in turn lessen the financial burden upon our current taxpayers. I will use my leadership abilities to improve cooperation between the Commission and School Board by focusing on this common interest.

What do you believe is he most pressing issue facing the school board and how would you address it?
As a father with children attending our public schools, I am concerned the State lists our system as “Not Exemplary.” I plan to change this by using my training as an attorney to (1) communicate high expectations to administrators, (2) closely scrutinize progress, and (3) if necessary, hold administrators accountable.

How effective do you believe Eddie Hickman has been as the schools director? Explain.
While I am certain our director cares deeply for our students, like most parents, I am concerned the State’s 2013 Report Card states that our school system is “Not Exemplary” and that we failed to reach our goals for student achievement in 4 subjects (and actually declined in 3). [3]
