Dot Matthews was a candidate for Powhatan District representative on the Williamsburg-James City County school board in Virginia. She was defeated in the special election on November 8, 2016.

One of the seven seats on the school board was up for special election. The Powhatan District seat was up for special election due to an appointment on the board. Mary Minor, the appointed incumbent, did not file to run for the seat, which left it open for a newcomer. Lisa Ownby defeated Dot Matthews to win the seat.[1][2]
