Islas ran for election to the Caldwell County Court.
Primary: He was successful in the Democratic primary on March 4, 2014, receiving 46.2 percent of the vote. He competed against Paul Gomez and James Bertram.
Runoff: Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, Islas faced Gomez in a runoff election on May 27, 2014. Islas won, receiving 64.6 percent of the vote.
General: He was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014, after receiving 47.6 percent of the vote. He competed against Ken Schawe.
