Issues in the district
Federal investigation of discrimination charges
The district faced an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education into claims that some schools are using discriminatory academic performance targets. Officials with the department's Office of Civil Rights are reviewing academic targets established under the district's Investing in Educational Excellence contract with the Georgia Department of Education.[6] This initiative created by the Georgia State Legislature in 2008 allows districts to sign contracts with the state Department of Education that provide more flexibility with academic achievement goals at individual schools.[7] Investigators were reviewing whether district or school officials have subjected students to different academic standards based on race, ethnicity and disabilities. The claim was first filed in 2011, and the district received a request for additional information from the Office of Civil Rights in May 2014.[6]
