- Strengthen & Protect Our Home Rule Charter:
I oppose any effort to weaken the Charter powers of Initiative, Mini-Initiative and Referendum.
I also oppose the inappropriate efforts being proposed by some to turn our Charter into a policy document, a vehicle for the airing of cultural grievances or a constraint upon the proper legislative authority of our County Council.
The Charter Review Commission is a place for ordinary citizens to discuss improvements to the structure and form of our county government, not a venue for politics by other means. - Support Fair Districts for our County Council: I believe that voters should choose the people who represent them - not the other way around. While we have made improvements to our redistricting process, I believe we can still do better. I also oppose returning to the old way of doing business, where wealthy interests rigged the district lines to override the interests of voters.
- Oppose Political Interference in Public Agencies: I oppose political meddling in our County administrative agencies. Too many of our Charter candidates want to return to the old days, when county employees dealt with inappropriate requests from wealthy special interests. I believe the only interest group our county government should serve is the public interest. I also support reforms to our County Board of Health, to ensure that our public health policy is guided by the best available science and evidence-based reasoning. Currently, there is nothing to prevent the appointment of unqualified persons with radical views. I support efforts to enshrine basic qualifications for County public health officials.
Too many of our citizens today feel unrepresented and unheard by our democratic form of government.
I support efforts to make our county government more transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of our community.
Our Charter Review Commission is a critical voice for the people - it brings direct democracy, transparency and accountability to local government through genuine community input and the direct participation of ordinary citizens.
