Support
Candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Idaho, Bob Nonini (R), said: "Prosecutions have always been focused on the abortionist. There is no way a woman would go to jail let alone face the death penalty. The statute alone, the threat of prosecution, would dramatically reduce abortion. That is my goal."[3]
Opposition
- Janice McGeachin (R), candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Idaho, said: "No, I cannot support a woman facing the death penalty for having an abortion. What we should do is prevent that."[3]
- NARAL Pro-Choice America said "What's pro-life about convicting women of first-degree murder for accessing abortion care? Absolutely nothing. It's no surprise that the party that claims to be pro-life supports a guy who wants to impose the death penalty on women accessing health care."[4]
Path to the ballot
In Idaho, supporters are given 18 months to gather signatures once an initiative has received a ballot title. They are not allowed to collect signatures past April 30 of the year in which the respective initiative would appear on the ballot.
2018
- The initiative received an Attorney General certificate of review on September 22, 2016.[5]
- Supporters needed to submit 48,793 valid signatures to county clerks by close of business on May 1, 2018, in order to qualify the initiative for the 2018 ballot.
- The initiative was withdrawn as of April 19, 2018.[6]
