|Who Am I?
I’m Iman Osman—a proud Lewiston kid who grew up dodging puddles on Lisbon Street, sneaking extra fries from KFC, and playing endless soccer games at Kennedy Park. Let me take a moment to share how I arrived at this important juncture. Like many of you, I grew up right here in downtown Lewiston. It’s where I attended school, landed my first job, and built my family and business. This city is not just my home; it is the very heart of who I am. This city shaped me, taught me resilience, and gave me my most important job yet: being a dad to my 10-year-old son, who’s now making his own memories on these same streets.
Yet, I understand that many of us are feeling helpless in the face of rising challenges—like the constant fear of gunshots ringing out in our neighborhoods, disrupting our peace and safety, and the legitimate frustrations regarding improperly discarded syringes. Throughout my door-to-door campaign, many of you have expressed frustration, feeling that our city officials haven’t done enough to combat crime and violence, leaving us in survival mode, wondering when we will feel safe in our own homes. It’s time to move beyond survival mode and reclaim our sense of safety in our own homes. My campaign is committed to turning our collective concerns into effective action.- Community-Centered Leadership for Safer Schools Iman Osman is committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students in Lewiston. Growing up in Lewiston has shaped Iman’s understanding of the pressing challenges our community faces, from concerns about safety to the need for inclusive educational practices. Iman believes that every child deserves the right to learn in an environment free from fear and full of opportunity. By prioritizing safety measures, mental health resources, and community engagement, Iman aims to build trust and collaboration between families, educators, and local leaders. Together, we can create schools that not only educate but also nurture the well-being of our children.
- Empowering Students Through Inclusive Education Iman Osman believes that every child in Lewiston should have access to a high-quality education that reflects their unique backgrounds and experiences. This campaign is dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment where diversity is celebrated, and every student feels valued and heard. By advocating for equitable resources, culturally responsive curricula, and programs that address the needs of the whole child, Iman aims to ensure that all students have the opportunity to excel academically and socially. Together, we can cultivate a school system that empowers every learner to thrive and reach their fullest potential.
- Transparent and Accountable Governance for Educational Excellence Iman is committed to fostering transparency and accountability in local government, especially concerning public education. As a candidate, Iman understands the importance of involving educators, families, and community members in decision-making processes. By prioritizing open communication, regular feedback, and a collaborative approach, Iman aims to ensure that the voices of those most affected by educational policies are heard and valued. This commitment to transparent governance will help build trust within the community and lead to informed decisions that directly benefit our schools and students. Together, we can create a school system that not only meets the ne
2. Local Decision-Making Authority: City Councils have the authority to enact laws, policies, and regulations that directly impact the community. This local governance provides flexibility to address unique challenges and opportunities that may not be adequately addressed at the state or federal levels. City Council members can tailor solutions that resonate with the specific dynamics of their community.
3. Role in Education Policy: City Council members often play aAh, the unique and pivotal role of local government! The office of a City Council member, particularly in the context of supporting education and community well-being, possesses several qualities that make it a vital component of the state government and legal system. Here are some key aspects that highlight its importance:
1. Local Representation: The City Council serves as the most immediate and accessible form of government for residents. It provides a platform for community members to voice their concerns, needs, and aspirations. This direct representation ensures that local voices are heard in governance, allowing for decisions that reflect the specific needs of the community.
My cousin embodies qualities that I deeply admire: resilience, compassion, and a strong sense of responsibility. He has always been there to offer support and guidance, helping me navigate challenges and encouraging me to pursue my dreams. His ability to connect with people and uplift those around him is something I aspire to emulate in my own life and work.
His dedication to community service and advocacy has inspired me to take an active role in my community. He demonstrates that leadership is not just about holding a position of power, but about making a positive impact in the lives of others. I strive to follow his example by prioritizing inclusivity, empathy, and collaboration in my efforts to serve Lewiston.
Vision and Forward-Thinking: A strong leader must possess a clear vision for the future and the ability to think strategically. Iman aims to inspire others with a forward-thinking approach, focusing on innovative solutions to the challenges facing the community and setting ambitious yet achievable goals for progress.
Accountability: Elected officials must hold themselves accountable to their constituents, taking responsibility for their decisions and actions. Iman emphasizes the importance of being responsive to community concerns and maintaining open lines of communication to ensure that constituents feel heard and valued.
Community Engagement and Representation: Elected officials must serve as the voice of their constituents. This involves actively engaging with community members, listening to their concerns, and representing their interests in city government. Iman is committed to fostering open lines of communication and ensuring that the diverse voices of the community are heard and considered in decision-making processes.
First and foremost, I want to be remembered as a champion for education. I aim to advocate for policies that ensure every child in Lewiston has access to high-quality education and the resources they need to succeed. By fostering a culture of learning and support, I hope to inspire future generations to pursue their passions and become active, engaged citizens.
Additionally, I wish to cultivate a sense of community and belonging. I want my legacy to reflect a commitment to inclusivity, where diversity is celebrated, and everyone has a seat at the table. By promoting collaboration and understanding among all community members, I believe we can build a stronger, more cohesive society.
Furthermore, I hope to leave behind a culture of civic engagement, encouraging individuals to take an active role in shaping their community. By empowering residents to voice their concerns and participate in local governance, I aim to foster a sense of ownership and pride in our shared future.
This election represented a profound shift in American history and culture, symbolizing hope, progress, and the possibility of change. As a young person, I felt inspired by the idea that barriers could be broken and that leadership could reflect the diversity of our nation. It sparked my interest in civic engagement and showed me the power of collective action and grassroots movements.
Watching Obama's campaign unfold, I was particularly moved by the way he connected with people from all walks of life, emphasizing unity and the importance of community. This event not only motivated me to become more involved in public service but also shaped my understanding of the role that representation plays in governance.
At LLBean, I learned the significance of attention to detail, as every item handled contributed to the overall customer experience. The fast-paced nature of the job instilled in me a sense of discipline and efficiency. I found joy in being part of a team that worked collectively to ensure that quality products reached customers on time.
First, Obama’s journey of self-discovery and identity is compelling. As someone who also navigated complex family dynamics and cultural backgrounds, I find his reflections on growing up and understanding his place in the world incredibly relatable. His candid exploration of his experiences, from his childhood in Hawaii to his time in Chicago, provides a nuanced perspective on the challenges of identity and belonging.
Second, the book highlights the importance of community and connection. Obama emphasizes the role that relationships and community play in shaping who we are. This theme aligns with my own belief in the power of community engagement and the impact it can have on individual lives. It serves as a reminder that our stories are interconnected and that we can support one another in our journeys.
Finally, Dreams from My Father inspires hope and resilience. Obama’s narrative illustrates how perseverance in the face of adversity can lead to meaningful change. This resonates with my own experiences and fuels my commitment to advocating for those who may feel marginalized or unheard.
As a lawyer and a father, Atticus exemplifies the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. His commitment to social justice and equality inspires me to advocate for those who may not have a voice, especially in my role as a public servant. I admire his ability to listen, empathize, and teach valuable lessons about humanity to his children and community.
Furthermore, Atticus embodies the idea of moral courage. He faces societal pressures and prejudices with grace and steadfastness, reminding us that true leadership requires both strength and compassion. In a world that often seems divided, I strive to emulate his approach by fostering understanding and inclusivity in my own community.
Growing up in the Dadaab refugee camp added another layer of complexity to my experiences. The challenges of life there—limited resources, uncertainty, and the struggle for basic needs—shaped my understanding of resilience and survival. Despite these hardships, I learned the importance of community, support, and the strength that comes from shared experiences.
Eventually resettling in the United States was a transformative experience, but it came with its own set of challenges. Adjusting to a new culture, language, and environment while carrying the weight of my past was daunting. However, these struggles have instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude and a desire to advocate for others who face similar hardships.
2. Local Ordinances: City Councils can enact local ordinances that address specific community needs, such as noise control, littering, and public safety regulations. These laws can be tailored to the unique circumstances of the community, allowing for more responsive governance than state or federal regulations.
3. Budget Oversight: While many know that City Councils oversee budgets, they also have the crucial responsibility of prioritizing funding allocations across departments. This includes ensuring that essential services like education, public safety, and infrastructure receive adequate resources to meet community needs.
4. Community Development Initiatives: City Councils can initiate and support projects that promote community development, such as affordable housing, parks, and public transportation improvements. These initiatives play a vital role in enhancing residents' quality of life and fostering community cohesion.
5. Grant Acquisition: City Councils have the ability to seek and manage grants from state and federal sources, which can significantly benefit local programs. This power allows councils to enhance funding for education, health initiatives, and infrastructure projects, addressing critical community needs.
1. Understanding of Governance: Individuals with prior government or political experience often have a better grasp of how local government functions, including legislative processes, budgeting, and public policy development. This knowledge can lead to more effective decision-making.
2. Established Relationships: Previous experience can help candidates build relationships with other elected officials, community leaders, and stakeholders. These connections can facilitate collaboration and support when advocating for community needs.
3. Policy Knowledge: Having a background in politics can provide insight into existing laws, regulations, and the political landscape. This understanding can help City Council members navigate complex issues more effectively.
4. Crisis Management Skills: Those with experience in government may be better equipped to handle crises and unforeseen challenges, as they have likely faced similar situations before and developed strategies for resolution.
Value of Diverse Backgrounds
However, it's also important to recognize the value of diverse experiences:
1. Fresh Perspectives: Individuals without traditional political backgrounds may bring fresh ideas and perspectives that can challenge the status quo and foster innovation in local governance.
2. Community Connection: Candidates who are deeply rooted in the community may have firsthand knowledge of residents' needs and concerns. Their lived experiences can inform more empathetic and responsive policymaking.
3. Engagement and Activism: Many effective leaders come from backgrounds in community organizing, education, or advocacy, where they have honed skills in mobilizing constituents and addressing community issues without formal political experience.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are vital for effectively conveying ideas, policies, and community needs. Council members must be able to engage with constituents, articulate their positions, and facilitate discussions with diverse stakeholders.
2. Collaboration and Teamwork
The ability to work collaboratively with other council members, local organizations, and community leaders is essential. Effective governance often requires building consensus and fostering partnerships to address complex issues.
3. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
City Council members should possess strong problem-solving skills to navigate challenges and develop innovative solutions. This involves analyzing data, considering multiple perspectives, and making informed decisions that benefit the community.
4. Budgeting and Financial Acumen
Understanding budgeting processes and financial management is crucial for making informed decisions about resource allocation. Council members need to prioritize funding for various programs and services while ensuring fiscal responsibility.
5. Community Engagement
Skills in community outreach and engagement are vital for connecting with constituents. This includes the ability to facilitate town hall meetings, conduct surveys, and actively listen to residents' concerns and ideas.
6. Advocacy and Negotiation
Effective advocacy skills enable council members to represent community interests at higher levels of government. Negotiation skills are also important for reaching agreements with other stakeholders, whether in budget discussions or policy development.
7. Knowledge of Local Issues and Policy
1. Direct Representation of Constituents
City Council members serve as the primary representatives of their constituents. They are directly accountable to the people who elected them, making their role fundamentally focused on understanding and addressing the specific needs and concerns of the community. This direct line of accountability fosters trust and engagement between residents and their local government.
2. Local Decision-Making Authority
City Councils have the power to make decisions on a wide range of issues that directly impact daily life, such as zoning, public safety, education, and community development. This localized authority allows them to tailor policies and initiatives to meet the unique needs of their communities, ensuring that governance is relevant and responsive.
3. Budgetary Control
City Councils hold significant responsibilities when it comes to budgeting and financial oversight. They determine how public funds are allocated across various departments and services, including education, public safety, and infrastructure. This financial control is critical for prioritizing community needs and driving positive outcomes.
4. Community Engagement and Empowerment
City Council members have the unique ability to facilitate community engagement and empower residents to participate actively in governance. Through town hall meetings, public forums, and outreach initiatives, they can encourage dialogue, gather feedback, and foster a sense of ownership among community members regarding local issues.
5. Policy Development and Implementation
City Councils play a crucial role in developing and implementing local policies. They can enact ordinances, regulations, and initiatives that address specific challenges facing the community, from public health to environmental sustainability. This ability to drive change at the local level is a powerful tool for improving the quality of life for residents.
6. Advocacy for Local Interests
City Council members act as advocates for their community at the state and federal levels. They can represent local interests in discussions about funding, legislation, and policies that affect their constituents. This advocacy helps ensure that the unique needs of the community are considered in broader decision-making processes.
7. Flexibility and Responsiveness
Local government, particularly through City Councils, can respond more rapidly to emerging issues and community needs compared to higher levels of government. This flexibility allows councils to address urgent matters, implement innovative solutions, and adapt to changing circumstances effectively.
8. Building Community Identity and Cohesion
What struck me most was when she spoke about her eldest son, who is in middle school and struggles with learning difficulties. Maria described how she often feels overwhelmed trying to navigate the resources available to support her son while also juggling her work and household responsibilities. She expressed her frustration with the lack of accessible mental health services and educational support for children with special needs in our schools.
As she shared her story, it became clear how much she cares for her children and how determined she is to advocate for them, even when the odds seem stacked against her. She told me that she dreams of a community where every child, regardless of their background or challenges, has access to the support they need to thrive.
Listening to Maria’s story reminded me of the importance of empathy and the critical role that public service plays in addressing the real issues families face every day. It reinforced my commitment to advocating for better educational resources, mental health services, and support systems for families like hers.
This journey began when I listened to parents, teachers, and students express their concerns about the lack of resources available for children, particularly those facing challenges at home or in their learning environments. Motivated by their stories, I collaborated with fellow board members and community leaders to develop a proposal that outlined the benefits of expanding these programs.
After weeks of community meetings, discussions, and advocacy, we were able to secure additional funding from both local and state sources. The impact of this initiative has been profound. We not only increased access to after-school programs, which provide a safe and nurturing environment for children, but we also integrated mental health resources into our schools. This has helped students build resilience and cope with the challenges they face.
Seeing the direct impact of this work—students engaging in enriching activities, parents expressing gratitude, and teachers reporting improved classroom dynamics—fills me with pride. It reinforces my belief that when we listen to our community and work collaboratively, we can create meaningful change.
