James Sarbanes

James (Jimmy) Sarbanes is a circuit court judge for the First Circuit Court in Wicomico County, Maryland. He was appointed to the court by Governor Martin O'Malley on February 24, 2014.[1][2] Sarbanes ran for re-election to the First Circuit Court in 2014, winning a full term expiring on December 31, 2029.[3][4] He was named Circuit Administrative Judge effective August 16, 2021 by Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera to replace retiring judge Brett W. Wilson.[5]

Sarbanes ran for re-election to the First Circuit Court.
Primary: He was successful in the Democratic primary on June 24, 2014, receiving 63.6 percent of the vote. He competed against Melvin Caldwell Jr. Sarbanes cross-filed as a Republican and received 43.0% of the vote in that primary.
General: He defeated Melvin Caldwell Jr. in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 55.6 percent of the vote.

Education
Sarbanes received his undergraduate degree from Salisbury University and his J.D. from the Widener University School of Law.[2]
Career
Sarbanes practiced law with his firm of Laws & Sarbanes from 2005 until his appointment to the First Circuit Court in February 2014. He was also previously an associate attorney with the firm of Adkins, Potts & Smethurst.[2]
