Joy A. Jones is a judge for the 11th Judicial District, which presides over Harnett, Johnston, and Lee counties in North Carolina.[1] She was elected to the court on November 4, 2014, to a term that commenced on January 1, 2015, and expires on December 31, 2018.[2]

Judicial performance evaluation
In July 2014, the North Carolina Bar Association released the results of a survey in which it asked lawyers to rate the judicial candidates for the trial courts. The candidates were rated from one to five on five different criteria as well as on their overall performance.[3]

Education
Jones received her undergraduate degree in criminal justice and political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 and her J.D. degree from the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis in 1989.[4]
Career
Jones began her career as a researcher at Northwestern University. She then worked for the Marion County Prosecutor's Office as a criminal court coordinator and community relations officer. She later became the municipal court administrator and an administrative assistant in that office. In law school, she interned with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office Gang Unit and with the Legal Services Corporation of Indiana. After graduating from law school, she started work as a deputy district attorney in San Diego, California, in the narcotics, gang and child abduction divisions. She then spent two years as an assistant attorney general in North Carolina before becoming an associate attorney at Narron, O’Hale, and Whittington. She then maintained her own law practice, Joy A. Jones, P.A., from 2008 until her election to the 11th Judicial District in 2014.[5]
