An effort in Springfield, Missouri, to recall City Councilmember Justin Burnett from his position was launched in October 2015.[1] On January 15, 2016, Burnett announced his resignation from the council due to health concerns.[2] He rescinded his resignation from office the following day. Recall organizers ended their effort to remove Burnett, citing his willingness to listen to concerns from community members about his proposals.[3]
Recall supporters
Jessica Lawson and the group Recall Justin Burnett sought Burnett's removal from the city council over his support for changes to the city's indecent exposure law.[4] Over 70 protesters held a "Free the Nipple" rally in August 2015 to call for reduced clothing requirements in public places.[5] In September 2015, Burnett proposed and the city council approved a stricter indecent exposure law in response to the protest.[6]
Katie Webb, speaking on behalf of the group, told the Springfield News-Leader that recall supporters were planning a petition drive before the policy change over Burnett's support for adding "In God We Trust" to the front of Springfield City Hall and repealing sexual orientation and gender identity protections from the city's non-discrimination policies.[4][1]
