Political career
Prior to her appointment in February 2006 as Secretary of the Commonwealth, Katherine Hanley served as Providence District Supervisor for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors from 1986 – 1995. She was first elected chairwoman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in a special election held in February 1995. She received a full four-year term in November 1995 and was re-elected to the position in 1999. Though she contemplated a run in 2001 for the office of Lieutenant Governor, Mrs. Hanley eventually deferred to then-Richmond Mayor Tim Kaine who went on to defeat Republican Jay Katzen for the position. Rather then seek re-election, Katherine Hanley mounted a primary challenge campaign against Jim Moran for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District seat in 2003.[2] She ultimately abandoned her campaign, due to family reasons, in December of that year. In July 2004, Governor Mark Warner appointed her a Northern Virginia District Member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board. When Tim Kaine became governor, some had expected her to be selected as the state’s transportation secretary; she was passed over in favor of incumbent Secretary Pierce Homer.
