|Larry’s professional expertise is complemented by his deep commitment to community service. As chair of the Los Altos Historical Commission and president of the Los Altos History Museum, he has played a vital role in preserving and celebrating the rich history of Los Altos. In 2016, Larry furthered his dedication to the community by participating in the Los Altos Community Foundation leadership development program (LEAD). He extended his understanding of environmental stewardship when he became a Santa Clara Valley Water district ambassador in 2021.
Larry’s campaign for Los Altos City Council is driven by his passion for enhancing the sense of community and belonging among residents. He advocates for sustainable growth that respects the town's unique character, ensuring that Los Altos remains a place where future generations can thrive. His vision includes not only maintaining the historical essence of the town but also embracing innovation and progress. Through his leadership, Larry aims to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-thinking community that honors its past while building a sustainable future.- Our community requires a balance between thriving progress and the preservation of our rich heritage. As we move forward, it's essential that we embrace innovation and growth—particularly adding housing—while maintaining the unique character that makes Los Altos a special place to live. This means thoughtful development that respects our open spaces and the charm of our neighborhoods. By fostering responsible progress, we ensure that future generations can enjoy both the modern advances and the timeless haven that shape our city's identity. This balance is crucial for sustainable growth and community well-being.
- Improving safety and resilience while maintaining essential infrastructure is critical for the well-being of our community. This includes upgrading and modernizing key facilities, such as upgrading the police station to better serve and protect our residents. We must also prepare for natural disasters like earthquakes and wildfires, which pose real risks to our area. Strengthening our infrastructure and cultivating a great team of public safety professionals supplemented by community volunteers will help safeguard lives and property. By investing in these areas, we create a safer, more secure future for Los Altos, while ensuring essential services are reliable and responsive when we need them most.
- Fostering a sense of belonging for everyone is essential to creating a vibrant and connected community. Just as plants and trees thrive when they put down deep roots, it's important that every resident—whether they've lived here for decades or just moved in—feels a strong connection to Los Altos. This means creating opportunities for neighbors to engage, building inclusive spaces where all voices are heard, and celebrating the diversity that makes our community unique. By nurturing these roots, we allow them to grow deeper and stronger, ensuring that everyone can thrive and contribute to the rich fabric of our city. This sense of belonging is key to our collective future.
Another quality I admire in Truman is his willingness to share credit. He supported the creation of the Marshall Plan to help rebuild Europe after World War II, but he didn’t insist on putting his own name on it. He understood that leadership wasn’t about personal recognition but about doing what was right. That humility is something I hope to emulate—being willing to step back and let others shine as they serve the greater good.
Attentive listening is equally critical. A great leader must not only hear concerns but actively engage, reflect on them, and ask meaningful follow-up questions. This kind of listening fosters trust and strengthens community bonds.
An open mind is another essential trait. Effective governance depends on the ability to consider diverse viewpoints, even those that challenge one’s own. By being open to new perspectives, officials can make better-informed decisions and demonstrate humility and a commitment to learning. This flexibility is key to finding solutions that go beyond rigid thinking.
Equally important is the willingness to delve deep into the issues. In a fast-paced world, it's tempting to skim the surface, but complex problems demand a thorough understanding of the details. Elected officials must be willing to explore policies, potential impacts, and trade-offs with thoughtful analysis. This commitment to research ensures more responsible and effective decision-making.
