Approval rates

A parcel tax question was on the ballot for Las Virgenes Unified School District voters in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, California, on November 3, 2015. It was approved.

Measure E authorizes the district to continue its annual parcel tax—a kind of property tax based on units of property rather than assessed value—of $98 per parcel for 12 years.[1]

District voters approved this tax in 2004 and renewed it in 2007. It was designed to expire in 2015 without approval of a measure continuing the tax, such as Measure E. In 2011, voters defeated Measure K, which would have authorized a $95 per year parcel tax for eight years.

As of 2015, the district served 11,319 students in 15 schools.

A two-thirds (66.67%) vote was required for the approval of Measure E.

Ballot question

The following question appeared on the ballot:[1]

To protect the quality of education in our local schools, fund core programs in math, science, reading, technology and the arts, attract/retain highly qualified teachers, counselors, and technology specialists, maintain smaller class sizes, enhance student achievement and prepare our students for success in college and careers, shall Las Virgenes Unified School District continue for twelve years the existing $98 annual school parcel tax without raising the current rate, with an exemption for seniors, and all money staying local?[2]

Support

Linda Northrop, chair of the Agoura Hills planning commission, said, “Measure E is a platform for success for children that we and our children enjoyed. It’s good for our children, good for our property values and, most importantly, it’s good for our communities.”[3]

Cindi Iser, president of the LVUSD Board of Education, said, "They want the same opportunity for their families. This investment by the voters supports excellence, support for the teachers (and) accountability for expenditures. We (all) value the well-rounded education that the additional funds bring.”[3]
